Do You “Stage” Your posts – You Should!

Like it or not, most of us are visual creatures with short attention spans. With all the posts being generated every day on Active Rain, you want yours to stand out, get noticed and read!

I’ve seen many great posts that were feature worthy not get recognized because they had no graphics, white space in between paragraphs or were a little too long to read with the daily time constraints we have to spend in the Rain.

A blog post should be between 200-500 words to keep people’s attention.

First write out your text, choose what groups you want to post to (you can choose up to five – think of your target audience) and save it to draft. Then go back and add your links and pictures.

Speaking of pictures - always add a picture or two and don’t forget to click the appearance box so your text is smashed up against your picture! How?  After you hit the photo icon to download a photo you'll see "Insert/edit image". At the top, right next to the "general" box is an "appearance" box which allows you to add space between your photo and text (I use 6 horizontal and 6 vertical to keep it easy.)

Only after you’ve read, re-read and proofed your post (don’t always trust spell check –if you want to say their but type there, it’s not going to catch it.

Now you are ready to post it to members only or public. Don’t forget to take it out of draft!

Highlight key words and add links to your website or hide links within your photos (just use “add links” using the link icon) when inserting your pictures - more Google juice. If you want your post reblogged, post it to public.

Make sure your title is geographically specific to the area so your readers will find you.

Be sure to check out these Active Rain recourses resources...see what I mean about spell check - lol!

Kristine:

Thanks for another clever blog.  When I see blogs that are all text and long, I usually don't read them.  I have considered suggesting that the poster consider making their paragraphs shorter, adding color and pictures.  I don't know how do make that kind of comment and do it tactfully.

Great post and so easy to read. That's the point isn't it. You didn't discuss it but the type font and size are important too. This is an area where I have mixed results. Sometimes I can't get a font to stick.

Terrific post, Kristine.  I must admit that I have a very difficult time wanting to read the posts of people whose text goes all the way across the page. (that haven't set up some kind of background)

Kristine, I hate it when there is a long list of prior posts at the bottom of each new post.  It's a pain to navigate down to find something you might want to comment on.  And I think it looks pretty crappy.

I'm good with pictures and clipart but I don't usually use different fonts or colors. It's time I branched-out. I love what you've done here for example.

I would have to concur with others; some blog posts cannot be limited to a 500 word cap and some simply would make no sense to break up a long post in several short ones. some topics are simply a bit lengthy.

Very good information for ActiveRain members.  There is much that I do not know how to do when it comes to staging my posts.

Good job explaining "staging" posts - and coming from a stager, of course! Definitely figure out the padding - I hate seeing the text crammed up next to the photo!

What are you doing inside my head Kristine?  I love a post that is well "staged".  I'm very particular about font and color too.  I like your use of the slighly larger purplish text (and I'm not a fan of purple).  It's easy to read.

Great post!
