Young Adventurers is a day-trip program in San Marcos-Escondido-Vista. The founder of the Young Adventurers was Lyle Davis of the Kiwanis Club of Hidden Valley. The purpose was to divert kids from joining gangs. Many of the members of that Kiwanis Club as well as the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos became volunteers. Young Adventurers take day trips on weekends to places that offer enrichment, exercise, fun, and adventure. Favorites are boating, hiking, flying airplanes--real and model planes--swimming, and exploring places of interested all over San Diego County. Funding is mainly from memorial donations to an endowment fund set up through the efforts of John Smylie (Kiwanis Club of San Marcos) and Lyle Davis (Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club). Members of the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos, and other volunteers, act as chaperons and generously use their own cars to provide transportation on these day trips.
Our most recent trip was a big hit with all of the youngsters. Everyone met at Double Peak Park in San Marcos early in the morning and spent the next three hours on a wonderful treasure hunt. None of our Young Adventurers had heard of "Geocaching" but they quickly learned how much fun they could have getting out in the wilderness on a hike. I believe we will add this to our list of regular activitys for the youngsters.
