BRUNSWICK, MARYLAND, A TOWN OF 6,000 RESIDENTS AND NO GROCERY STORE??

When I learned that Super Fresh Grocery Stores filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, the news was that some stores would be closed.  I was shocked to find that the Super Fresh in Brunswick, MD will close it's doors June 23rd, 2011.

NO GROCERY STORE IN BRUNSWICK.  A town of over 6,000 residents will have NO GROCERY STORE!!!

NEW GROCERY STORE IS "PLANNED".  A new grocery store is "planned" for Brunswick Crossing, a new home development in Brunswick.  However, it's still only "planned".   HA!  A Trader Joes was "planned" for Lovettsville too.  5 years ago when I built my home in Lovettsville, the Trader Joes was still planned for the New Town Center.  It never came.  The collapse of the housing market was all it took to send Trader Joes and other commercial conveniences packing.

As of June 23, 2011, the nearest grocery store for Brunswick, MD residents will be:

Frederick, MD - 13 miles
Purcellville, VA - 11 miles
Leesburg, VA - 15 miles
Charlestown WVA - 20 miles

Brunswick MD  Town of Brunswick.

Homes Brunswick  New and newer homes in Brunswick.

I never did that much shopping at the Super Fresh in Brunswick because, since I get to Leesburg and WEGMANS about every week and I get to Purcellville and GIANT every week, Wegman's is my first choice.  But, about once a week, I hopped across the Potomac River to Brunswick for fresh milk, yogert, water and fresh produce when it was priced right.  There is a Harris Teeter coming to Purcellville, but they are not a good choice for fresh produce which is what I buy mostly.

Oh well.  I'll miss the Super Fresh but I do have alternatives.  Many of the residents of Brunswick will not.  The Super Fresh was shopped by many elderly who walked from the apartment complex next door.

Wow, they're going to have to hitch up the wagons and head to Purcellville or Leesburg!  With those distances you can't just go there for one or two things!

Jay.  Indeed.  I see this as a real handicap for Brunswick residents for some time to come.

Hi Lenn,

White Plains had this issue in the early 1990s when my late mother was running for city council.  A city of about 48,000 live-in residents and about 150-200,000 commuters and only one supermarket - and a small one at that.   From what I recall from my mother's campaign there were a couple of problems.  Supermarkets and grocery stores have a very low profit margin so that getting a foothold in a town with a lot of retail (which White Plains is noted for - even back in the early 90s) is a tough nut because the rents are high.  Then there is also the NIMBY issues.  Every place they tried to put the grocery store the residents were up in arms because of the traffic issue - a fear no one could put to rest because you've got nearly 50,000 people who need to buy food!

I would think that once a grocery store goes in, then home sales will be much easier in Brunswick.

I love the quaintness of the town however in your photos!

Ruthmarie.  Seems to me that even if a super market located on the outskirts, it would be viable in a town with no store.

Paul.  That's what they promised Trader Vics in Lovettsville.  The housing sales never materialized.  They have to some extent now but not enough for a grocery chain.

Lenn....

My home town in Montana was down to once grocery story many years ago and it really made shopping tough. Of course times have changed, but my Mom drives 28-20 miles to Bozeman to hit Walmart or Costco and use to do ALL her grocery shopping at a particular store in Bozeman until it opened in her home town.

But no store at all? My partner's brother owns a market in New York and the grocery business is a tough one to make money in right now. They have a very slim profit margin from what I understand, and shopping can be very cyclical too...

Hope someone sees an opportunity!

It sounds like Brunswick, Maryland has a ready made business opportunity.

Good luck and success.

Hello Lenn ..This is a sad turn of events especially for the seniors. I heard on the economic report the other day ..They were not expecting the economy to pick up until 2014 ..What's a person  to do living on a limited budget/income ..This makes me very sad and troubled.

Thomas.  I hope so too.  Brunswick is not a wealthy town.  It's an old railroad town.  The new home communities will improve the avarage income but everyone there needs a place to shop for groceries.

Lou.  I don't know.  No one seems to be jumping in right now.

Hanna.  I felt the same way when I went over to pick up some red pepper and yogert.  They didn't have either.  Half the shelves are empty and the sign on the door says June 23.

Living in a small town, we can totaly relate.  Our WalMart was the #1 store in the ENTIRE company for years since it was the only one within a 50 mile radius.  50 MILES!!  Of course, they have opened a couple more now and we can actually move around in WalMart on a Sunday afternoon now.

Those poor residence of the apartments next door will, more than likely, be the hardest hit.

Ruthmarie- It is very true that the grocery stores have a super low profit margin and that is not going to change anytime soon. They have been absorbing much of the rising food prices but that can only last so long.

Katerina.  Whole Foods is appealing to the nutritionally aware and expanding.  Super Fresh is generally located in a different demographic.  I'll be interested to find out which super market is planning to open in Brunswick.  I think I'll visit the info center today to see if they have that info.

Bill and Cyndi.  Indeed.  As of Thursday of this week, folks without an automobile will have no place to go.

Katerina.  IMO, super markets have a super low profit margin because they insist on stocking everything that is edible, packaged and can be put on the shelves.

The Super Fresh in Brunswick appealed to the low income and less than mobile in Brunswick because of location and that they were the only grocery in town.  They were, however, expensive.  Their produce was generally priced about 20% higher than the more abundant produce at Wegmans.  The nearest competition to Super Fresh in Brunswick was in Frederick, 13 miles away.  In effect, there was NO COMPETITION.  I didn't shop Super Fresh produce because I have alternatives.  Many of the residents of Brunswick had no alternatives.

Steven.  So do I.  They're probably waiting for the new community to "build out" more.

Kay.  There is one "convenience store" in Brunswick, a Sheetz, which is really gasoline and junk foods.  There is no 7-11 or other classic convenience store.  The "dollar" stores, there are two carry food, but no produce and mostly packaged junk foods.

Lenn: Is there a Chamber or a County economic development authority working on this? The powers that be need to look at the consumers in the town, plus the planned development(s) to create a business plan to entice a chain.

I agree that the type of store coming in will depend on the demographics of the area.

Finally, does anyone know if the SuperFreah made money? Not all of the closed stores were in distress. A profitable or near profitable store history could be an enticement for a new chain. The size of the store, the mix of the merchandise could be planned and adapted as new development comes in.

Lenn, that will be a terrible loss for the elderly thatwould take the short walk next door. Those that work out of town will have a slight inconvenience, but they'll make it. It is an opportunity waiting to happen for someone, however.
