Waiting for a Flood

Tourists. It brings to mind people in bright shirts and flip-flops with sunglasses and a flash camera. Not only do tourists not look like this, but we've been noticing that less of them have been appearing. Bend has felt this lack of tourists over the past couple of years as though it's a drought. With the recession at the front of everyone's minds there haven't been as many tourists. Central Oregon is thirsty for a fresh wave of tourists . . . but local business leaders are hoping for a downpour this year.

Tourists often bring money with them that they've saved especially for that vacation. That cash makes its way to Central Oregon registers from the pockets of over 2 million visitors every year. The president of Visit Bend, Doug La Placa, says that they're changing their strategy to bring even more business to Bend: they're going to ask these tourists to stay. Not only are folks from out of town going to visit but "we are officially asking them to move here, we are asking them to relocate their lives, their families and their businesses here."

Central Oregon is a great attraction for tourists. Bend is one of the highest ranking tourist traps in the state. It may be a good place to go for a visit, but what will keep these tourists from moving on to the next town? What could possibly attract a flood of visitors instead of a steady trickle? One of the biggest factors in drawing strangers in to Central Oregon is the stunning landscape. There are majestic mountains, forests, lakes and trails to traverse at every turn. There's biking, hiking, skiing on Mt. Bachelor, swimming in Paulina Lake and exploring the forests throughout Oregon. Our very land is an excellent asset that helps draw attention to our appealing home.

Tourists may even stay with us here in Bend! Not only would having these new families in town bring new friends into our community, but it would contribute to the Central Oregon economy. During the droop in 2008 the economy really suffered from the lack of travelers. According to Wanderlust Tours the amount of visiting families rise this year. Not only are families traveling, but businesses are "having more meetings outside of their own business locale." Even within the real estate office we see many newcomers and friends alike: it is nice to see some new faces within our hometown. With multiple concerts on all summer, Mount Bachelor attracting the sportsmen in the winter, and the brewery hard at work, the coming year seems full of anticipation. Deschutes Brewery is getting ready for summer: they want to put a cold beer in the hands of their customers. The brewery is working to expand their facility to display it the tourists that visit.

An area of fun and excitement for tourists as well as Central Oregon dwellers is downtown Bend. The theatre draws interest and the many shopping centers and streets lined with interesting stores are welcoming to everyone. The best way to attract tourists is to "let the visitors know that they are here, saying [we are] glad they are here and thank [them] for coming to Central Oregon."

The downtown area is home to a real estate office that is able to house all of these eager tourists.
