What is happiness to you?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Gold, Fair Oaks

So what is happiness to you?

There is work that is work and there is play that is play; there is
play that is work and work that is play. And in only one of these lies happiness.

-- Gelett Burgess

I read this quote and the more I thought about it, the less I was sure what Burgess was getting at - "only one?".  The option I would like is the "work that is play", and that is the one that most closely resembles my life as a Realtor.   But my happiness also includes being a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and knowing that I can count on them as they can on me.

So what is happiness to you?  Many have tried to define it, and here are a few.  In my opinion, some of them come closer than others to how I feel.  Which is your favorite?

Happiness is essentially a state of going somewhere, wholeheartedly, one-directionally, without regret or reservation.
-- William H. Sheldon

Happiness is good health and a bad memory.
My husband Jon and me in Freddie's kitchen
-- Ingrid Bergman

I'm not happy, I'm cheerful. There's a difference. A happy woman has no cares at all. A cheerful woman has cares but has learned how to deal with them.
-- Beverly Sills (1929-) American Opera Singer

Will and I could hardly wait for the morning to come to get at something that interested us. That's happiness.
-- Orville Wright, co-inventor of the airplane

Our capacity to draw happiness from aesthetic objects or material goods in fact seems critically dependent on our first satisfying a more important range of emotional or psychological needs, among them the need for understanding, for love, expression and respect.
-- Alain De Botton

Maybe some of each of them. I do identify a bit with Beverly Sills' definition though, as my family and I have had to overcome some bad stuff.  But I do try to be cheerful through whatever hits, because it doesn't make you feel better to make others feel worse for having been around you!

Susan - it took a minute but Gelett Burgess has it right ..... happiness lies in only one ..... "work that is play" for we do have to work. Some people spend a lifetime working at something they hate because it pays well ..... if you hate your work how will you ever be happy.

Happiness is a moment in time. And hopefully, there are many of them over one's lifetime. With life's ups and downs, happiness probably cannot be sustained over a long period of time.

Very thought provoking post. And it is too early for me to be so deep, LOL. But you certainly have given me food for thought this morning.

Happiness, contentment, are they the same? Yes, it is too early for me to think about it. But it is worth thinking about!

Susan:  I remember n the Big Chill, one of the characters said, "Is anyone really ever happy?" or something to that effect!  Sometimes it does seem like everyone is always complaining about something.

Great question Susan.  At the end of your post you have a quote, "making clients happy, makes me happy".  That's probably close to what makes me happy too...making OTHERS happy, makes me happy.

Happiness is something we are all told to expect - since our stories as children all ended with the people living "happily ever after."  Unfortunately, it isn't that easy, and I think that you have to find your own path to happiness, or at least contentment.  I do get happy when my clients are happy, and that is why I made that my motto.
