June 21st, the summer solstice, in the northern Hemisphere the longest day of the year. Ever since I was young, it was this day that I realized that my birthday, December 22, was always on, or very close to the winter's solstice, making it one of the shortest, if not the shortest day of the year.
People would mention to me that I must feel shortchanged having a birthday so close to Christmas. Funny, that never bothered me... My answer was that my birthday was easy to remember... but today, with sunrise in Alliston at 5:36 a.m. and sunset coming at 9:06 p.m., a day we will have 15 hours and 30 minutes of daylight, always seemed to remind me of how short my birth "day" actually was... funny how this thought came back into my mind, as if I was seven again...
Congratulations and Happy Birthday to all of you out there who happened to be born today! My son, Alec's birthday is next weekend, and he will enjoy longer birth "days" all his life, though he starts celebrating on Canada Day, July 1st, and carries through to July 4th, assuming the fireworks are, in part, for him ;-)
Since today is the day the sun shines on us the most of any day in the year, it befuddled me as a child why July and August were hotter than June... I better stop this before I really start taking a trip down memory lane...
It looks like a great morning, though the weather services are predicting some Thunderstorms today, tonight and tomorrow.
Wherever you are, and whatever weather is coming your way, enjoy the summer solstice, and welcome summer, which will officially start at 1:16 pm!
