Is it easy being green? There have been stories of many people who have remodeled “green” and saved on their utility bills, some up to $400 per month. What does it cost to remodel “green”? Can you justify the cost? Well, let’s take a look and see.
There was a survey conducted and about 88% of homebuyers do consider the electric and heating & cooling costs prior to making a decision to buy a home. So, I guess we can say there seems to be high interest in lowering utility expenses and having a healthy, eco-friendly home.
Due to the improvements in technology alone, you can see that energy consumed just by home appliances have dropped sharply since 2000. Replacing an appliance that is inefficient can save up to 43% of your energy consumption. Some Energy-Star refrigerators can consume less energy than a 60 watt regular light bulb. If you replace your old refrigerator, it may not be cost effective to than use that old refrigerator as a 2nd refrigerator, you may have just defeated your objective. You can sell or donate your used appliances too.
Purchasing Water Sense conservation items for toilets, showers, bath fixtures, and irrigation system can reduce your water usage by 30% which is about 11,800 gallons of water a year for a typical family. Just the showerhead can save about the same amount of water as 385 bottles of water in a week. Replacing a 9+ year old washer with a newer one can save nearly 5,000 gallons of water a year. Don’t forget the toilets….an average savings of 4,000-15,000 gallons of water per year. A professional can assist you in obtaining the correct “green” shower head or toilet that will actually save you money. If your showerhead won’t allow water to rinse your shampoo out, how much more hot water is being used? Also, if you have to flush more than once you really are not saving either. Be cautious and read labels.
In addition to saving after a “green” remodel, there could also be tax credits and utility company rebates available as an incentive to offset the cost of qualifying home improvements.
Going GREEN, being GREEN! It used to be just a COLOR!!
