I Bought A Mac, And I'll Never Go Back

Mini MacLike most people, I've been using PC's for most of my professional career. However, back when PC's were primarily "office machines," people who had computers in their homes overwhelmingly used Macintosh.

My dad bought a Mac when I was 16, I believe. I used Macs until I was about 25 and that was it. It's been 15 years and I don't know what I was thinking.

Recently, I decided that I wanted to make a mortgage application for the iPhone. I love my iPhone and I thought it would be a really neat idea to start developing mortgage and real estate iPhone apps.

One big problem I faced: You need a Mac to develop an iPhone app.

So a couple of months ago, I snooped around on eBay until I found a used Mac at the right price. I bought a "Mac mini" for under $500. It was an outstanding deal:

Intel Duo Core 2.46 GHz processor, 4 MB of RAM (expandable to 8), 320 GB hard drive, and a very fast "Mac Superdrive" which I can use to watch BlueRay movies or burn my own DVDs and CDs.

I just used the monitor from my soon-to-be-permanently-retired Dell PC.

My PC is now collecting dust in the closet, and I don't know if I'll ever turn it on again. Now that I have used a Mac for two and a half months, I don't see ever going back.

  • When it arrived, I was pretty shocked. The computer itself is about the size of a stack of 7 or 8 CDs. That's it. I love that it's so tiny. My PC tower is about 15 times the size of my Mac.
  • The mouse and keyboard are both bluetooth-wireless. I don't have to waste two USB ports on my computer for wireless mouse and keyboard receivers.
  • The mouse has invisible buttons. It works using the heat in your fingers. If you want to scroll on a page, just take one finger and run it down your mouse... As if you were using a scrollbar-- but there isn't a scrollbar. You can even scroll side to side or in an S-shape if you chose. Just slide your finger around. Also, there is no left or right buttons to click, you just tap the left or right side and it knows.
  • The keyboard is completely flat, and just propped up on one side. Without exaggerating one bit: It is 1/6th the overall size of my Dell keyboard, and works even better. It's small flat buttons have increased my typing ability (a.k.a. "production")
Enough with the aesthetics! Let's talk about the computing power.

This machine is almost identical in specs to my PC, yet moves a lot faster.

In addition, I've been using it for 2 months and I've never had to restart, unless I installed new software.

It hasn't crashed a single time in about 10 weeks.

It works very intuitively. Everything makes sense. I never find myself getting angry at my computer. It works the way it's supposed to work: It just works. No confusing messages; no crashes; no problems.

Just one example: The Mac knows what a file is, regardless of it's "extension." Let's say your kid is messing with your PC and changes some file names-- and gets rid of the extension-- the file will become unreadable to the PC until you change the extension name back to it's proper form... If you can even find the file ever again.

With a Mac, you can change the name of disneyVacation.wmv to disneyVacation.rain and it won't make a bit of difference. The Mac will always know it's a movie.

I don't want to write a book here, but that is just one tiny example of how the operating system is better. I've discovered about a dozen so far. If anybody is interested in knowing more, let me know and I'll write another post.

In the meantime, I've got to get to work building a mortgage application!

You've caught my interest now so I'm going to have to check out the Mac's.  Please do post some more articles on the Mac and what you can do with it.  I'm looking forward to the mortgage app's when you finish them.

You and my daughter! She's talked so much about her Mac that I actually thought about trying one when my last (5 year-old) HP laptop expired. But, I stuck with habit and bought another new HP Notebook lol  I may cave in someday.

Hi Michael - I started with the very first Mac in 1984 and eventually owned 12 of them. One of the saddest days of my life was turning off my last one for the last time - this was before Macs started running windows and I had lots of software compatability problems. Haven't gone back to the Mac yet - need to sell a few more homes - but I've had my iPad from the beginning and it's everything you would expect from Apple. Hard to put it down (but you can't leave an AR comment with iPad Safari).

I'll be the dissenting voice.  After using PCs for over 20 years, I thought I'd try a Mac.  Just simply couldn't make my brain fit.  Example:  Downoading software.  It took me over half a day to figure out how to make the "disk image" go away.

Hi Michael...I've wanted a Mac since the 80's, the problem has always been no software for Real Estate..still many Real Estate programs are compatible and if I switched I'd need all new software and maybe new hardware such as my lasre printer...och. I have a iPhone4 too love it, it too never crashes my old Palm did sometimes.

I have my Computer Singing and I just enlarged the hard drive...so for now I'm stuck in MS PC land...Cheers

I understand from a lot of mac users that they love them, maybe next computer or laptop I will make the switch.   Glad to see you are building mortgage apps!

I will be buying a new laptop very soon and am seriously considering a mac. Glad to hear you love it. My biggest hesitation is the compatibility issue. Your post is another check in the mac column. Thanks!

Michael,

I could not agree more. I was a top Windows Mobile Software developer, which means all I ran was Windows. I switched out all our machines to Macs a few years ago and I will NEVER go back. Life is so much better now...
