Saturday night at home in North Scottsdale we had an uninvited guest in our garage. It was a guest my husband almost stepped on. We wanted our visitor to leave, and called the Phoenix Herpetological Society to take him away. Turned out we did the right thing, because we found out the lizard was a Gila monster and he was protected, and unless we were licensed to “touch” him (ha ha) we would have been breaking the law.
I caught the rescue on my little Flip Video cam. I thought I would post the YouTube video I had inexpertly made on my AR blog. My husband and I debated the sense of this because we didn’t want to keep people from moving to North Scottsdale. I am absolutely crazy about where we live and have always felt like I’m on vacation every time I drive north of the 101 freeway into the Sonoran desert to my home in North Scottsdale. But I wanted my friends and others to know what to do if they should encounter wildlife in their garage. So I posted it. I got a few comments on my blog from AR members; thank you for noticing! I also shared my blog and video by email with Nate Deason, the venom manager for the Phoenix Herpetological Society who came out to help us.
On Monday by 1:30 p.m. all heck broke loose! First local NBC Channel 12 called; I was pretty amazed that they would call me about a lizard (I guess when you put the word “Monster” in his name it sounds like Godzilla was here). I met with the reporter at a Starbucks on Scottsdale Rd. on my way back from a home inspection in Gilbert.
THIS IS THE NBC CHANNEL 12 NEWS VIDEO
When I got back in my car, I had messages from channels CBS-5, ABC-15 and KTVK-3 all wanting to come to my home to interview us about our experience!

And then Channel 10 wanted to come out the next day! Turns out the Phoenix Herpetelogical Society had an excellent PR guy, Pat Impiccini, of PR Communications who couped a clean sweep with all the major TV stations! (If anyone needs an excellent PR guy Pat can be reached at 602-202-8652.)
KTVK-3 NEWS CLIP
I thought it must be a really slow news day, but I learned from one of the news reporters that you can’t just throw hard news at viewers for the whole newscast, so they try to mix in something a little lighter to keep the viewers interest.

It was a fun experience, I’ve had my 15 minutes of fame, and I definitely learned the power of YouTube -as I write this I’m up to 486 views on YouTube in less than two days!
If you view the news clips, and are wondering why you’d still want to live in a home in North Scottsdale, remember these three things: 1) mosquitoes won’t be ruining your patio dining in the evenings; 2) you will never, EVER, shovel heat, and 3) almost ALL your days are good hair days!
