Bill - it is quite interesting to me how you write a blog and then add multiple comments to the blog.  Does this gain you points, search engine optimization; I'm curious.

Hi Lori. Yes, adding the comments does gain me more points… 10 points, to be exact. I don’t know if it helps with SEO.

My goal in adding these comments, however, was to add more info about my services without making my post really, really long. (I read that people don’t like reading really long posts.) So I started adding my additional info as comments. And when I added my comments, I realized that my AR points starting going higher. I was surprised.

So here’s the breakdown of how I accumulate the extra points for my comments (as best as I can determine):

  • Each comment that someone leaves on your post awards your post 4 extra points.
  • At least three comments must be added to your post before you can gain points for comments. So if only one or two comments are added to your post, no points are awarded.
  • By adding at least three of your own comments, you reach the minimum number of comments required to earn comment points.
  • Only one of your own comments is awarded points. (So if you add three or four of your own comments, only one earns 4 points.)

Oops! Did I say your own comment adds only 4 points? Well, there is an exception: When the comment contains 100 or more words, the 4 points is bumped up to 10 points. That’s true whether it’s your own comment, or someone else’s. (So if everyone left 100-word comments on your posts, you’d earn 10 points per comment instead of just 4 points.)

So, by adding at least three of my own comments, and with one of those comments containing at least 100 words, I earn 10 points.

And since you added your comment (which happens to be less than 100 words), it then added an additional 4 points to my post… for a grand total of 14 points. Make sense?
