Picking out the granite...

After finally making the decision on our house we finally get to start doing the fun part. It has been a long road of trying to figure out what we wanted to do.  Thinking about having kids soon, what city, what school, what price range, build new or buy preowned, investment property or one we can stay in???????  I think we met every home builder in the DFW area over the past year and we felt so blessed for the right thing to fall right in our lap!

We have decided to go with M Christopher Custom homes and if you are thinking about building in the DFW area I could not recommend someone more. Today was the start of picking out our upgrades and we started with the granite.  I have seen thousands of kitchens and there are a lot of beautiful granites.  It is much harder than we thought to pick out grantite for our own home.  With so many options and a kitchen, 4 baths, a web parlor, and a bar how do we decide??? It isn't near as stressful as everything leading up to this, we are actually just excited to pick out all of these things.  The cool thing about working with this builder is we get to go to the granite place and pick out our actual slabs!  That is much better than picking everything off of a 4" x 4" piece like most builders. Now we are trying to figure out if we want the dark stained cabinets or the antiqued paint with glaze cabinets. That will go a long way in helping us pick out the granite.  I don't know if it sounds like it, but I am actually not stressed at all.  If all we have to worry about is what granite we are going to pick at this point I can't complain! Next week wood, tile, paint, and carpet options!  My wife just wants to close before Christmas!

Glad you are enjoying the homebuying experience and finding it not too stressful!  It is fun to make all of these selections and it sounds like you did your homework ahead of time.  Please post pics as the construction progresses.

Hi Simon!   I'm glad you are not really stressed about the granite selections.   Tells me you have a great idea of what you want and that should take most of the stress out of the process.   Having said that... I am sooooo jealous!

You may also want to verify where the granite came from so you avoid any radiation-exposed granite in your home.

Simon, this sounds so exciting! I absolutely LOVED the homebuilding process on a custom home we completed and sold last year and I can't wait till we're ready to do it again. Just remember to bring samples of your cabinet door when you go granite slab shopping...and if your countertops will have seams, it's "best" to pick a slab without "irregular" movement, if you're concerned with the pattern all going in the same direction. :)

Simon,

Making all the selections required by building anew home is exciting, time consuming and sommetimes frustrating but worth it at the end.

Tahnks for commenting on my blog about pets and planning for their move.

Simon - You're at the fun part now, picking out upgrades is so much fun, however the price tag to go along with those upgrades isn't always fun.

Wish I could afford granite at my place! I have tile, although it is the large tile which makes it easier to clean.
