The great balancing act...

Today started off  with a bang at around 7:30 A. M. with my 6 year old son bouncing around the bed to get us motivated for todays 9:00 A. M. soccer game with a second one starting at 10:30 A.M. "Where is my uniform?" " I need my pads.." were the immediate needs as the morning sun shined through our bedroom window... breakfast was only secondary.

My 7 year old enjoys his morning snooze and is a little harder to get motivated. They are so close in age but total opposites. Anyway first things first, on to the coffee maker. As I  began to grind the Organic, Shade Grown, Fair Trade whole bean coffee, I remembered that part of the kids uniforms ( the bright orange sox) were left in the trunk of the car along with the soccer balls from Thursdays practice session...now going on 8:00 A.M which left little time to to get them washed and dried prior to the big Games. Coffee, I need more coffee, I thought to myself as our deadline grew nearer. Prepared and ate breakfast....Sox in the wash, to the dryer, miraculously washed, dried and applied to little feet by 8:30 as we walked out the door with cleats on feet, untied of course...an achievement as it was.

We get to the soccer field and most of the team is there warming up with jumping jacks and stretches to get the blood flowing. Parents seemed to be walking around somewhat in a daze and trying to get acclimated to the cool autumn air in contrast to their warm beds so early on a Saturday morning. Anyway the game was great. The kids played great together and were even willing to put aside some of the glory and pass to their fellow team mates. Score 6-1 what a game ( Who keeps score?) On to the 10:30 game. Another great game full of team effort, a love of what they are doing, and just having fun. Which brings me to the question that I ask myself "at what age do people lose that sense of freedom, the willingness to hand off the glory to a co-worker, to love what you do just for the sake of it." Is there an age? Is it the pressure or the added responsibilities that we have as adults that make people change? Some people would say yes, but I disagree.

There is a great balance in life. What is your secret? How do you manage your business, your time for your significant other, your children ( and everything they are into), school, educating yourself, spirituality, your free time....
