The business' open the patios and side walks fill with retail merchandise as people stroll down Hawthorne looking to relax in a very open minded area of Portland. I personally feel like anyone visiting Portland should check out the Hawthorne district for it's trendy yet laid back experience.

The Hawthorne District is made up by the Buckman, Ladd's Addition, Hosford-Abernathy, Sunnyside, Mt. Tabor and Richmond neighborhoods. As Hawthorne is not officially recognized as an single neighborhood.

The Hawthorne District in Portland, Oregon is an area of Southeast Portland on SE Hawthorne Blvd., particularly between 30th and 42nd Avenues.[1] The area has numerous retail stores, including clothing shops, restaurants, bars, brewpubs and microbreweries.[1][2] Hawthorne district is known for its young, liberal residents and pedestrian-friendly high density mixed-use development. The district has been known for having various social groups, such as Generation X, hippies[3] and more recently, hipsters,[1] although the district is mostly inhabited by people who don't neatly fit into stereotypical categories.[citation needed] The Hawthorne area has vintage homes[1] and apartments and locally owned shops and restaurants. The Portland Hawthorne Hostel is located on Hawthorne Avenue, offers travelers budget hostel accommodations, and has an environmentally-friendly rainwater collection system on their roof.[4]
