If you have a choice between earning a high commission or helping a family fulfill their dreams, which would you choose

What does it takes to be a great agent?  If you have a choice between earning a high commission or helping a family fulfill their dreams, which would you choose -- line your wallet or make your heart happy?

My choice has always been to fulfill the dream first and then all would be good with any commission I receive.  I made it to number in Exit Realty Virginia earlier this year based on that very premise.  Another very successful agent told me that I have been cheating myself.  Do you agree?

Thirteen years in the business and I until recently have always thought of myself as a friend to my clients.  And of course you try to treat your friends to the luxuries we all deserve.  Am I being rediculous or just being me.?  I will answer that -- JUST SIMPLY BEING ME!!

Congrats!

I believe that if the agent's commission takes priority, then more deals are lost.  That's lose-lose all round.

Vangie,

Excellent post.

Agents who spend their time calculating the amount of commission they will earn if "such and such" happens, are doomed to never reach their full potential.  Be surprised when they hand you your check at the title company and you see for the first time how much it is.

Our job is just as you described it.  Nothing less.  This is my 43rd year in the business.  I say that only as some qualification that my opinion has had years to develop and be proven.

You know Bill that is so funny that you say let it be a surprise, 95% of the time I don't calculate my commission, everytime I have counted my chickens before they hatch, I got nada.  I have even had to tell my assistants don't calculate commissions.  Clients (friends) first, always.  Money last.  Funny thing is, I always tell agents I am mentoring remember "Clients can refer, Money just spends!"
