A conversation with a lender today bought to light some very interesting information.  Not new news but another reason why.......

During a scheduled conference call in regard to business, she let me know of another lending institution who had recently denied a borrower after doing research about him/her on Facebook.

Exactly what the facts are I don't know and I really don't care to know.  I do know the most important information:  Your information is out there for all to see and evaluate if you post on Facebook.

Private settings you say?  I know of a company that hires people just to "lurk" and gather information.

So that so called "friend" that wants to friend you might be someone hired to do this type of "investigational spying."

Is this now part of routine background checks, with background checks being the norm now?  I know of a young girl, 18 years old who just got offered her first "real" job.  She is currently having a background check done prior to final hire.  Two of my children just received job offers, both having back ground checks done.

What does this mean for you Mr. seller and Mrs. Buyer?  It means keep the information that needs to be private...private.

Recently I heard of a buyer who located the sellers Facebook page.  The sellers were posting how happy they were to finally have an offer and getting "the hell out."  Well guess what position that put the buyer in?  You guessed it.... A great position.  It might have cost that seller thousands of dollars.

One last point here.  If you are wondering why you are not being hired perhaps you need to review your Facebook page.

Are you letting the world know about:

That recent breakup and the bottle of tequila last night?

You not being able to go on without John or Jane?

The terrible day you had today and why people "suck"?

My suggestion is better take it down.  Run to take it down.

I have a discussion with my buyers and sellers about this and other information for being in a position of strength when negotiating.

Like a parody skit I saw recently said, "If they told everyone to give up all this information about themselves there would be an outcry....no, no, no!"

Facebook is developed and ....we give away the farm.
