Can Someone Help With this Identity Crisis?

Well - it's not exactly a crisis. But I really would like to know the identity of this tree.

It stands outside the bank in Priest River and the blossoms were so beautiful last week that I had to stop and take a picture. But I am definitely not an expert on flowering trees, and it seems that no one else I know is either.

Even the ladies in the bank had no idea...

So, can anyone tell me the answer? What is this tree? flowering tree blossoms

I've seen it before but the name escapes me. Check out www.leafsnap.com and see if you can find it.

Crape myrtle? I have never seen one that I know of, I think it is a southern tree but my inner druid thinks it is a Crape myrtle.

Hi Marte - My guess is a flowering Hawthorne. We've got one we put in several years ago, and didn't know it flowered. What a nice surprise.

Michelle - I'll do that. Thanks!

Maureen - If it's Southern, it got transplanted to North Idaho!

Barbara - I'm going to do that.

Dick - That would be a nice surprise! I'll check that out.

Isn't it funny that the bank ladies didn't know? I would think that other people would have asked, so they'd have found out. I do know the bank has a different manager these days - maybe the prior manager is the one who would have known.

It is a beautiful tree and has a similar shape as the crape myrtle.

Looks to me like I need to learn more about ornamental trees. The only trees I know on sight are pine, cedar, tamarack, birch, spruce, etc. Guess that what comes of growing up where there are already plenty of trees - so no one plants extras.
