The VFW began back in 1899 when Veterans of the Spanish_American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) started local organizations to obtain benefits and rights for their service to this country. Many of these folks were founded or sick and without a means to make a living. There was no medical care or pensions for these Veterans and they had to fend for themselves.
Across the country Veterans through grass roots efforts banded together to form organizations with what eventually would be known as the VFW. Chapters in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania were the forerunners for other states and the movement gained momentum. By 1936 the VFW membership had grown to almost 200,000.
The Katy VFW post 9182 was formed in 1947. It was named for Floyd E. Breedlove a Katy resident and a B -17 pilot was the first Katy resident to die in World War II when he was shot down in 1944.
The VFW annually with its 2.1 million members across the United States along with its Auxiliary members contribute more than 11 million hours of volunteerism in communities all across this great nation.
Come out support this fine organization and have great time this Fourth of July with the VFW in old Katy. Contribute by buying lunches, raffle items and auction items. The funds will be used for excellent community work that the VFW always provides. If you have any questions or need additional information go to VFW Post 9182 web site.
