CHARLEVOIX MICHIGAN MARATHON ~ A RACE TO REMEMBER!
This native Texan was thrilled to come to the beautiful state of Michigan and beat the heat from down south. I chose this race months ago and had no idea where Charlevoix, Michigan was. Boy am I glad that I was adventurous and signed up for this race.
Charlevoix is a lovely township in "up north" Michigan as the locals say. Just south of Lake Michigan and situated on Lake Charlevoix sits a charming city with quanit shops and eateries. Gorgeous flowers grace every turn! The fresh air is intoxicating.
When I called a few months ago and spoke with the race director she warned me that it could be hot up here in late June for the race. I asked her what her definition of hot was and she replied that it could be in the mid to upper 80's. I said, "Sign me up!" Escaping from the south Texas 100+ degree weather has been a real treat.
The race was small but extremely organized! A fantastic course that wound through some lovely home sites along Lake Michigan and then heading north of town. My favorite section of the race was the wooden foot bridge that seemed to go on forever. As you ran across the nature preserve, the sound of birds was incredible.
A truly charming and friendly place. Charlevoix, Michigan is a must-go to destination. If you are a runner, give the race a shot next year. A nice respite from the huge races that I typically run in. And, if you are not a runner, this is a great little town to visit.
Thank you Charlevoix for opening your city to those of us nutty marathoners and half marathons. It was a great race, a great experience and a beautiful place to visit! And by the way, at the start of the race it was in the high 50's and got up to a whopping 70 degrees yesterday! :)
