Lummi Ferry, Out But Not Down

By

Earlier this year, as I reported at my blog, there was tension between the county and the Lummi Nation about the fate of the Lummi Island ferry.  The Whatcom Chief transports visitors and island residents between Gooseberry Point on the mainland and Lummi Island.

Finally, about a month ago, the county and the Lummi Nation negotiated terms that should save the ferry run for many years to come.

However, due to routine maintenance, the Whatcom Chief will not be operating for part of the day on Wednesday, June 29. Glad I do not have an inspection on Lummi that day. That would be a real pain.  The ferry will be out of service from 11;30AM until 3pm. Anyone doing sightseeing, or business, had better make appropriate adjustments. Unless you have a private boat or a plane or a helicopter, there is not really any other way to get there and, as far as taking a car over, that county ferry is the only option.

Steven, I would love to know more about Lummi Island, and the Lummi Nation.  Please provide a link to that previous post you mentioned.  Also, have you done any other posts about the Lummi Nation ?  I love learning about things like this.

Karen Anne,

My blog posts, for the most part, involved the ferry arguments. I will add this wiki link for the tribe, not bad, and then I will see if I can find a couple articles I wrote on Lummi and add the links in a bit.

Here is an article I wrote on the island years back.

Howdy and evening to you Steve

Steve,
sure glad the Lummi Ferry was only under going maintenance, and it was not something new that had came up to keep it from run for folks.

Have a good one
