A long long time ago James P. Owen wrote “The Code of the West” to apply only to cowboys.
The word “cowboy” was introduced into the English language by 1725.
Cowboys were the most reckless class of outlaws in the wild country. Even worse than the ordinary robber. It was an insult to be called a cowboy because it suggested that it meant horse thief, robber or outlaw.
Men who herded cattle were called cattlemen or ranchers, not cowboys
