I understand that the MeMe is a way to get to know your fellow Active Rainers and where they came from and what they are about. I also realize that after 400 blogs and being very open about me and my sense of humor, there probably isn't much more to say, so I will start at the beginning and then post the 5 things I think you may not know.
I was conceived in the summer of 1969, oh wait is that to far back? I'll move forward a few years. I began to hate school in the third grade, because of a mean teacher. I later met another person whose parents actually removed them from public schools because of this same teacher.
This did put me on a path, that I must say, drove me to want to make money and own my own business from a very young age.
#1 - Started working full time at age 11 and started my own business at age 12.
When I was 11 years old, I wanted to be the first kid in the neighborhood to own his own computer. With my parents not making much money as teachers, I needed to get it for myself and the way to do that was working. I started in the berry fields at age 11 and was one of only 12 people out of 700 that were asked to stay on all summer. (Never in 2 years did I eat one berry.) I knew this wasn't the way to make it though and decided when I was 12 there had to be a better way. I started my own business! I started selling gum at school and later that year I bought a Commodore 64 for myself.
You see I was buying Bubble Yum bubble gum (5 pieces to a pack)for .25 and then selling the individual pieces to kids a school for .25 a piece. I was making about $40 a day, it was making great money until the school shut me down. I was cutting into the school store profit. I went on to sell concert tickets before starting my next real business at age 18, after graduating high school. I've owned three businesses since graduating high school, not counting my real estate business.
#2 - This may not be a surprise if you have read a couple of my blogs - I was a DJ
Yes, I was a radio DJ for two years. I did commercials and mobile DJ-ing after that, for 18 years. (The own business thing - I really hate having bosses.) Because of this, I have meet some pretty cool people over the years. I've met Peter, Paul and Mary, Cheap Trick, Slaughter and Gene Simmons of Kiss (And I have the Kiss Pinball machine in my garage.) I've also passed on this love of Kiss to my youngest. Click here to see the video
#3 - Got married at age 23 to my wonderful wife - She was my employee
When I was 22 and owned a DJ business, she was trying to break in to the business, and I had turned her down for a job. We both had a mutual friend that knew us both and told her to call me back and told her to tell me, "Sylvia says hire me or die!" I hired her and I am really grateful I did! Sylvia later admitted that, "She knew we would either hate each other or fall totally in love, since we were so much alike." Until GRI last year we had never spent more than 24 hours away from each other since meeting 15 years ago.
#4 - I have three wonderful kids and I delivered all of them!
I have a 9 year daughter, a six year old son, and a 3 year old daughter. I love them so much, they give me a lot of joy. I may change this opinion when my oldest daughter starts dating. Our first daughter, our most difficult at birth, didn't want to cooperate with me delivering her at home and after 48 hours of labor we had to go to the hospital and had her there. (Total labor lasted 56 hours)The doctor wanted to deliver her, but when he came in with his equipment, I "accidentally" sneezed on the equipment and had to go get more. I then delivered my daughter! My son and youngest daughter were delivered at home and the labor keeps getting shorter and shorter. My son was 39 hours and my youngest was only 24 hours of labor. Yes, I have a very tough wife!
#5 - I used to be skinny! 132 lbs when I graduated high school
When I graduated high school I was running 20 miles a day and was a rail! Then after years of only having a black and white TV, no VCR or Cable, I went off to college. I found a very cheap apartment in a very bad part of Tacoma. For those of you from Tacoma and Seattle, I lived at 12th and K! (Good news was it was walking distance to Frisco Freeze.) Well back to the story of college and my weight gain. The person who moved out before me was nice enough to leave a 25 inch color TV and never disconnected the cable and had ALL the channels. I was seeing TV and movies that I had never seen. In less than two years I had formed a callous on my finger where the remote sat! (Sad I know.) But, my callous is gone and I'm back on my path of working hard to not have to work for other people ever again. (Sorry no pictures)
Hope you all enjoyed your venture into MeMe and I will have to get back to you on who I'm passing this fun on to, since I have never really paid attention to who has and hasn't been MeMe'd in the past.
