Lonsdale Quay Market in Lower Lonsdale, North Vancouver:  Something Fishy's Going On

The Quay is home to some wonderful seafood shops, and your first stop should be The Salmon Shop.  Located at the south end of the Quay, The Salmon Shop boasts some wonderful, freshly caught salmon and other sundry fish.  This shop looks, feels and definitely smells authentic.  It's the kind of place where you would expect Captain Ahab to wander by, or where the guy behind the counter would hum   "I'se the Bye" under his breath.  There's a fabulous array of fresh, locally caught Digby scallops, wonderfully thick chunks of freshly caught crab, and salmon so large, it could feed an army.

The Salmon Shop offers lots of fresh Salmon, as well as the B.C. Famous Barbeque Sauce

I told these fellas to look "snappy" and smile!

Across the hall from The Salmon Shop is a wonderful seafood store called Screaming Mimi's.  How can you possibly go wrong with a seafood shop that has a giant Marlin hanging from the rafters.  This shop seems to cater more to the shellfish lover, and this lover is certainly interested in smacking her lips around a nicely simmered muscle or two, doused in butter and wine.  (Hey, I'm talking about seafood here...).  There's a live crab tank for those who take the meaning "fresh" to a whole new level.  Just watch out!  Read the sign:  don't stick your fingers in the tank!  Something crabby just might want to jump up and pinch you.

Now there's a Warning Sign if ever I saw one!

Another joy at Lonsdale Quay is admiring all the beautiful, floral arrangements and live orchids available.  Once you've picked up the salmon for dinner, you'll need to bring your sweetheart home a nice bouquet of colourful flowers for the dining table.  Flowers add so much colour, life and joy - why not?

Salmon - check.  Flowers - check.  What's missing?  Oh yes, a nice, chilled bottle of local B.C. wine to wash down the superb meal with.  Simply wander over to The Artisan Wine store, and pick up a couple of reasonably priced, local bottles of B.C. wine.  There's a nice selection at very reasonable prices.

It's easy to impress your friends with a meal to remember, all locally gathered at the Lonsdale Quay Market.  Oh, and don't forget dessert...  And tell them Sally Thibeault, Sally Brown and Sally Weatherley sent you!  Bon appetit!

OOooooh, Sal, it makes me think of my afternoon at Pikes in Seattle! I love the 'Screamin' Mimi's' store! Ya gotta love their sense of humour!

Valerie - I actually do shop there all the time.  Sure beats Safeway!  Oh, and I didn't even mention the home made chocolates and fudge...

Peg - It's very much like Pikes in Seattle, but not as well established.  That giant Marlin gives me the giggles every time.  Take a look at these B.C. Manila clams!

Sally -  great job on 'selling'  this fabulous market to one and all !   I wish we had something similar here but I have to travel to Montreal to get anything remotely similiar and it still wouldn't be as good :(

Susan - I love this market, and it's so close to where I live.  Ahhh, Montreal, one of my fave cities.  Ok, maybe I wouldn't go there for fish, but I'd definitely stock up on some pain au chocolat!

Roger - You read my mind.  That's exactly what we're going to do!

Shar - Are your markets made of ice, too?...  At least that way it would keep the produce really fresh!  Ha ha!

Hi Sally - That market looks like my fantasy come true. I ate my first fresh King crab and my first fresh Abalone in Vancouver. It ruined my taste for frozen King crab, and I've been looking for fresh abalone ever since - might as well chase the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. You guys have the best seafood in North America.

Dick - You're so funny!  I think the people in San Francisco might argue with you.  I've had some amazing seafood there, too.  Well, you'll just have to book another trip up here!

Sally ~ Your photos at the Lonsdate Quay Market are fantastic!  I'm a lifelong seafood lover and this would be one of my favorite haunts if I lived in Vancouver!

Maureen - It was fun running around the market with my camera, playing "tourist".  I suspect you have some wonderful markets like this in Portland, too.  It's a great alternative to purchasing produce in a grocery store.

Hi Sally,

What a fantastic place to shop...  I would love to go there!  Seafood is very high on my favorites list....  and especially Salmon!  One of my favorite places to visit is Fisherman's Wharf in both San Francisco and in Monterey, CA.  They have the best Clam Chowder there...  irresistible!!!  Lonsdale Ouay Market sounds much like Fisherman's Wharf.  Great photos....  I especially like how the Salmon fellas smiled and looked snappy for their photo op!

Sally thanks for this.  My son just moved to False Creek at the beginning of September.  This is a must to see the next time I am there.  Thanks for sharing. No markets like this in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Linda - I'm sure Lonsdale Quay was inspired somewhat by Fisherman's Warf...  Copying is the best form of flattery, I believe...

Wendy - I'm about to stage a property on False Creek - the unit has a gorgeous view of the ocean.  Your son will be very close to Granville Island - a post for another day...  Well, you have a great ballet troupe instead!
