The one feature you should watch in Google+

Services for Real Estate Pros with ShownHome

I have been poking around in Google+ since last night mostly trying to think about what is different and how it could be beneficial to real estate agents. Because it is still a fairly new product, I won't do a full analysis, but one thing did catch my eye.

In my last post, I gave the following list of conversation types:

  1. Advertising allows you to send your message out to the world where people will see it.  You can't see what those people think.
  2. Facebook lets two people decide to connect.  Those people can now have a conversation and see what each other think.
  3. Twitter lets you send your message out to the world where people (your followers) will see it.  You can also see what anyone is thinking!

Google+ is combining a part of Twitter and part of Facebook with their incoming feature. Most of what people see in their stream in Google+ is very similar to Facebook. If two people both have each other in circles (Google+ version of following) then the things they say and share will show up in your stream. However, consider the following scenario:

  • Bob wants to share something with John
  • John doesn't follow Bob
Twitter makes this easy because you can simply @ reply (say 'at reply') someone and they will see your message. Google+ puts these types of notifications in the Incoming area.

Google+ Incoming

Like I said, it is too early to know how this new dynamic will impact the way people interact, but it is something to keep an eye on and may have very real implications for real estate agents.

Dear Willis,
Looking froward to hearing more of your observations about Google+.
I am green with envy as it seems you have an invitation to the field trial.
I heard some folks (like pcmag, gizmodo) got a dozen or more!
If you have an extra - and you would want to share it - throw it my way.
My hands are open waiting to CATCH an invitation!
Have a happy day -
Lynn

Hi Lynn,

I would love to invite you, but they have all new invitations closed again. They have been opening them up for about 18 hours at a time and then closing it back up again.

All of this can be so overwhelming. I used Twitter, but don't really understand it...I have a Google+ Page, but don't monitor it...we need a way to manage all of them in one place.

It does get confusing to use so many social networks.  I am starting to use Google+ more and am not using Twitter as much...not sure if this makes sense or not, but because of Google I think using Google+ must be going to be more beneficial.

Willis:

I have a presence on Google+, but I don't do much.  I am still waiting to see if Google+ can pass Facebook's popularity.
