Keeping Up Top With Tech: “Google +” Edition

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Moby

Google sure seems to be on a roll lately! Earlier this week Google brought out the much-anticipated Google +1, the mobile landing page creator, and best of all on June 29th it announced the new Facebook rival: Google +!

Of all the social networking sites that have popped up lately, Google + has struck a very sweet chord with us. Why? Because it’s core product goal is Privacy! Google + gives you complete control over who you share what type of information with!

Curious yet? Check out the video illustrating how Google + works:

Is Google + A True Rival To Social Networking Giants Facebook and Twitter?

Based on early reviews, Google + seems to have impressed many influential tech peeps and having tested it out ourselves, we can also attest to its ease of use and unique features.

Google was very clever in creating the similar feel of Facebook when it comes to Google +’s interface so it extremely easy to get started! Google + has many great features that are highlighted in this video by life hacker, but here is our personal favorite:

Circles: Circles allows you to categorize your contacts into groups, and share information that targets that specific group, this can range from family to colleagues to your dragon-boat racing club.

As a big privacy advocate, this is certainly music to our ears! We firmly believe that not everyone needs to know everything about you. Not only does such public sharing force you to give up control over who shares your information, but it can also be a safety risk.

How Can a REALTOR® Use Google +?

One word: Categorization!

The easiest way to be hidden from your friends’ Facebook News Feed, whether you have a page or a profile, is most certainly done by sharing the wrong information with the wrong crowd. Well Google +, seems to conquer this problem as it allows you to share specific information with specific groups of people.

As a simple example, say you have a group of clients who are actively searching for homes. Simply create a Google Circle specific to them and start sharing interesting listings you see, or information about home searching. Not only is this a non-intrusive way of sharing information, but it is also a great way of sharing personalized information with the right audience. It is also a great time saver as you can send out targeted messages without having to spend extra time sending numerous individual e-mails.

How about sharing positive market news with clients who are on the fence about buying/selling a house? Or even sharing your holiday pictures with clients who have become close friends! Oh the list can just go on and on. And unlike Facebook groups, the groups you belong to are kept absolutely private, and are extremely easy to create and maintain!

As of writing this, Google + is in an invite-only phase, where a select group have been given invites. But with all the buzz that has been created, we are pretty confident a mass public release is imminent!

Have you had a chance to test Google +? If so what are your thoughts on it? Will it be the downfall of Facebook? Is the privacy feature a key selling point for you, or is it irrelevant?

Hi Moby - With all the attention given to Google +1, I had not seen anything relating to the mobile site launcher.

I've heard quite a bit about Google+ and was instanatly curious. Now if I could only get an invite! Thanks for the timely information!

The trend on some of the reviews I"ve seen is leaning toward this could be another google boondogle that never hits it's stride but I for one look forward to trying it out!

I hadn't seen the mobile landing page creater and wasn't quite sure what the +1 was yet.  Thanks for sharing and clarifying those two things.

Haven't gotten my invite yet, but with Zuckerburg already on Google+, I think shows that co-existance is the most likely outcome for an extended period of time.

Thanks for putting all of these new google products in one post, its much easier to research. The only drawback on Google's part is all of these names are unique outside of google but with all the product launches at the same time they all sound similar and their functions get confused. For instance, "+1" can be used when you log in to your google account but also your friends can track your "+1" notes, which means they can only see your information if they are on "Google+".

I also enjoy the lifehacker references, they are the best written articles in the poorly written conglomerate of gawker media.

As of right now, Google+ is invite only. Go to http://plus.google.com or the link above to be on the waiting list.

Thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to giving this a try, though it might be a while before we can use this to attract consumers. Can't hurt to have another tool.

Thanks for sharing.  Wish that I could get in on the beta because I'm curious about how well it works.  I really like the idea of the categorization.

Your blog was my inspiration for the day.  Here is mobile landing page I created between when I saw your article last and now.  I didn't do it the entire time, only spent maybe 90 -120 minutes goofing around with it.  check it out, not bad for free and a couple hours.

Marc, the launch of the mobile site creator definitely got lost with all the buzz around Google +. Have you tried the mobile site creator? It’s a pretty nifty tool for those in a hurry!

Rebecca, hope you get an invite soon! We too have heard a lot of the same speculation about it being another Google social hit-and-miss. However having used it for a while now, we sure do like it! If anything, it is a great reminder that social networking sites such as Facebook need to pay more attention to being centered around privacy.

Tom, not entirely sure as Google keeps changing its invite rules. But http://plus.google.com will allow you to put your name down for the waiting list.

Shane, we couldn’t have said it better, co-existence is most likely outcome for now.

David, thanks for your comments! We agree that it is confusing to have “+1” and “+” as two separate product names!

Ebrahim, we sure like the privacy aspect of Google + too!

Dawn, time will tell whether there will be a mass migration to Google +. But it is always best to be prepared with content if consumers do end up migrating!

Tim, hope you can get in soon! We were trying to figure out if we could invite our ActiveRain peeps, but our account is not enabled to do so.

Shane, that is amazing! When you just want to give out essential information, a simple landing page such as yours is all you need!

I'm a big user of Google's services. I can't wait to see how this integrates with GMail and Google Calendar.
