The "worlds luckiest fishing village" got it's name from Florida Governor Leroy Collins in 1956. Captain Salty promised a short ride around the harbor to the busy Governor while he stopped by briefly at the Destin fishing rodeo on his way to Pensecola for the Interstate Fair. While Captain Salty trolled his vessel the Miss Kathy with the Govenor on board the govenor caught, in less than fifteen minuutes, a 29 pound King Mackerel. This event was caught on film by the famous photographer Arturo Mennillo.
Arturo left his life work to his son Tony Mennillo. Tony publiished a book of his fathers work from 1945 to 1965 called Highway To Heaven photographs of Destin, Florida and the Emerald Gulf Coast.
Robin Catches Another One
The first blue marlin in the history of Destin was caught in the early 1950's by Captain Marler and his comrades.
