Loudoun County's Wine: The Sunset Hills Vineyard

By
Real Estate Agent with RLAH@properties AB95346

On  Saturday and Sunday afternoons, many people who live in and near Washington, DC head for Virginia wine country to check out what some of our local growers are producing.  Today, we headed out to Sunset Hills Vinyard near Lovetsville, Virginia.

This fellow greeted us at the door with a great big smile.  I felt that was a good sign.

We sampled some wonderful wines - many that had won prizes at state wide and national competitions.  The today's tasting included three white wines, three reds and a dessert wind.  I think my favorite was a 2009 Merlot - something that I will admit even though Merlot may be considered to be somewhat unchic by many of my wine snob briends.

But a highlight was a tour of the cellar with Diane Canney, who with her husband, Mike, have transformed a banrupt farm into a beautiful, scenic vinyard.

The tasting room is in an old barn that was meticulously restored by a crew of Amish builders who turned a funky, falling down structure into a beautiful venue for weddings and other festive occassions.

It's a beautiful place with wonderful wine.  Can't wait to go back!

Hi Pat, I don't know why I never considered there would be vineyards around DC.  Thanks for posting, I only connect DC with politics and glad to think along other lines.

Patricia-touring the vineyards was something we loved to do when we lived in Leesburg.  I was so surprised when we moved there that Loudoun County had vineyards, then to be able to take the tours in the beautiful settings was so special!

Now that looks like fun! Reminds me of years ago - we used to take those trips in Germany, my ex-hubby and some of his friends from the Engineering School in Konstanz. We used to have so much fun, driving and sampling wines....one local grower after the other through the wine producing areas in Baden-Wurrtenberg.
