Weird Americana-- Mid-1960's Style

By

At Active Rain today, being the 4th of July and all, I am seeing many photos of flags and tidbits of Americana in the various posts.  In looking at some of this material, it brought back to me a memory of this really strange 45 RPM record that became a hit back when I was a kid in 1966.

There is no question about it that, even back then, it was a novelty but it made it up into both the pop and the country charts in the USA. The words in it were very interesting and, no clue who came up with all of the coincidences or how factual the material was. It sounded good in a casual listen. The piece was narrated by a country singer named Buddy Starcher.

It outlined a number of amazing coincidences between the lives and the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln.

If you want to check out this intriguing piece of our recorded history, follow the embedded link below. The selected images, put in by the person who posted it, are weird at some spots, (Sherlock Holmes?) but other photos add to the story pretty well.

I loved the 60's. I worry about where this country is heading. Remember Re-Elect no one ever!

Profit from my two decades of experience

Steven-I remember the record, and still I'm amazed at all of the similarities these two great men shared in life and death. Have a good fourth!

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Here's a little more of history repeating.  All four presidents documented to have been assassinated in office were elected in a year ending in zero.  They were Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy.

Harding, who won the 1920 election died of questionable causes.  His wife, who was not a really satisfied spouse (Harding cheated on her) refused to allow an autopsy.  Some feel he was poisoned.

Raegan, elected in 1980, was shot but survived.  William Henry Harrison, elected in 1840, gave the longest innaugural speech which took up much of his presidency.  He died in office one month after the innauguration.  FDR, winner of the 1940 election, died in office.  Of the eight presidents who died in office, only Zachary Taylor was not a winner in a zero year election.  He died in 1850.

Mike,

I remember that well. When Reagan was elected many predicted that he would be killed and he nearly was.

Don,

I am not surprised, knowing you.  It has always been assumed that there was a conspiracy. I will pass your name along. And where were you the night D.B Cooper bailed out, by the way.

I remember having a sheet with all those facts in my junior high school civics class.  I still find all the parallels as amazing now as I did then.

Howdy and evening to you Steve

Steve,
I think the reason that Sherlock Holmes was added to the video, has to with his being a investigator. If you look at the different photos of him, they are of him pondering information.

Have a good one

Dale,

I am sure that is right, I just found it odd to have an Englishman in such an American novelty.
