About The Oak Ridges Moraine

Uxbridge straddles the heights of Oak Ridges Moraine, a ridge of land that runs parallel to Lake Ontario, approximately 60 km north of the lake and extending from the Niagara escarpment in the west to the Trent River in the east. The rolling hills and river valley that make up the Moraine are the result of the advancing and retreating glaciers some 12,000 years ago. Forty five percent of The Township of Uxbridge is located with in the protected area of the Oak Ridges Moraine. This includes extensive rural and natural areas, as well as some hamlets and even a portion of the urban area of the "Town".

Kathy...a great geological & history lesson have you just presented to us; never heard about the Oak Ridge Moraine before and to think that it is a lasting reminder of a 12,000 old Ice Age.  How interesting.  Hopefully your weather will cooperate and allow for a good group of 'cycles' .

Have a great rest of the week.

Here is a little more Information for you

The Oak Ridges Moraine is a Provincially protected, environmentally sensitive, area that covers 190,000 hectares. It is important to note that the large deposits of sand and gravel left by the Ice Ages also play a significant part in providing drinking water to a large portion of Ontario's population. The sand and gravel (aquifers) filter rain and melting snow, this filtered water is then released through the rivers and streams flowing south into lake Ontario and North into Lake Simcoe, Lake Scugog, and Rice lake.
