The Virginia Creeper Trail....A Great Place To Spend The Day!
Recently we took a trip to Damascus Virginia and experienced mother nature in a fun and unique way.
We rode down the Virginia Creeper Trail. To make our excursion easier and hassle-free we were patrons of the Blue Blaze Bicycle and Shuttle Service where you can rent bikes and they shuttle you up to the top of White Top Mountain where you can bike (downhill mind you) the beautiful and scenic 17 miles. You don't have to be a tri-athlete to finish this adventure and you can go as fast or slow as you like.
There are many sights to take in along the trail complete with information about the trail and critters that call this area home. The Virginia Creeper Trail touches Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee and West North Carolina - so while your traveling via bicycle you have journeyed to 3 different states all in one afternoon!
The Virginia Creeper trail began as a path for Native Americans. In the 1900's, a railway was constructed near the path to haul lumber, iron ore and passengers from Virginia to North Carolina. The trains that traveled along the route gave the trail its name because they went so slowly, battling the steep topography as they went. However, the train failed to make profits since the Great Depression. So it made its last run in 1977.
All was not lost though, thanks to the work of local volunteers, local and federal governments. The Virginia Creeper Trail was restored for recreational purposes in order that all may enjoy.
Today it remains one of the most scenic and picturesque trails in North America!
