Are You Worthy of Love and Belonging? The Power of Vulnerability...

In this video Brene Brown speaks about her research into personal connection. The discomfort of connection, and how; when people are asked about love, belonging or connection, all the stories they tell are about their excruciating experiences in shame. Not being worthy of belonging...

In her 6 years of research she found there were 2 kinds of people; the ones who have a sense of worthiness, a strong sense of love and belonging, and those who don't. She had to find out what the differences were and why.

Watch her life changing lecture to understand how to find the power of vulnerability...

Peg - I watched all of this inspiring woman's video to the very end. I have and always will subscribe to her new found philosophy of making yourself vulnerable and getting to know who we really are and what makes us tick.

12 years ago I knew I had a problem with alcohol and when the pain became too great I humbled myself enough to ask for help, went through detox (not fun) and went and still go to AA. I have not picked up a drink in 12 years all because I allowed myself to become vulnerable and ask for help. I am very proud of who and what I am today - the good, bad and the ugly.

I truly believe only the vulnerable who can talk and accept their weaknesses and work on them are the strongest of all people. Love this video and everyone should see it.

Kris, I remember you posting about you conquering your addiction, and I thought of you when I watched this video. You are such an inspiration! I think people who are too proud need to look back over their lives and see when they had their biggest breakthroughs. It might have been when they humbled themselves and asked for help... Thanx for sharing.

I am going to share this with my husband who runs a non-profit dealing with men struggling with addictions and coming out of prison (usually because of that addiction). Most are previous gang-bangers and vulnerability is not a good thing. They have learned to live on their own from a young age and that means not showing any vulnerability.

Shar, my hat is off to your husband. I feel for those guys, they've had a hard time, and the false front of bravado and machismo can be a hard thing to penetrate. I hope your husband can use this... Thanx! You both are such good people!

Not a real person

Many gay people succumb to the feelings of not worthy to belong, which is why it is important that the closet gets opened and a big doorstop put in place so that it can never be closed. I was at that place until I was 38. My closet doesn’t even have a door on it anymore!

Russel, When I was 18, I had a friend who was gay, I knew he was gay long before he told me, but the day he told me he was so nervous, I could see he was ready to cry when he finally said the 3 words, "I am gay." And I said 'so?' You could see the relief wash over him and the weight lift from his shoulders, it was wonderful. He'd told people before and they had walked away. I don't understand that. The gay person's not the one with the problem, that's all I have to say about that... I'm glad you are door free, it let's in more air to breathe! :D

Hi Peg -- I caught Sharon Lee's re-blog of your post. I've bookmarked to listen when time allows, and will likely send to my granddaughter as well, who's away at college and finding her way in the world. The reviews above are awesome!

Lottie, Sharon is awesome! Let me know what you think. I think it is a great thing for young people to see, but they are going to have a learning curve no matter what we teach them... Thanx!

Peg - I've heard this message before, but never delivered in a way that had so much impact on me.  You expect a spiritual leader to say this or a therapist, but not a researcher.  I know it wasn't easy for her to deliver that talk.  She was making herself vulnerable in doing so.  Isn't it interesting how so many responders to your post talked about transforming their lives by being more vulnerable or open.  Kristine is amazing.  I want to read her book when she finishes it.  I can't believe Russell struggled with being open about his sexual orientation until he was 38.  These are people who seem so full of joy now.  I'm going to reblog this.

Peg, I found this on Gail's post with an honest preface from her at the beginning.

Thanks to both of you for sharing the video - profound and yet so simple. I don't think I know very many people who really feel "worthy" 100% of the time. So very sad, but I'm going to keep working on it.

Great reminders to stop trying to appear to darn perfect.
