Could Your Beauty Products Be Sapping Your Youth?

Everyone wants to feel gorgeous, and all those beauty products on the market promise to make our skin soft, healthy, and appealing. But many of these contain chemicals that can actually have the opposite effect, sapping moisture and health from our skin.

The worst offenders are emulsifiers, chemicals that allow oils and water to stay mixed. They break down the natural oils on skin, allowing water to evaporate and closing off cells so they can’t eliminate waste or take in nutrition. The result? Cells die prematurely, and skin gets thinner and thinner and more prone to wrinkles.

Here’s how to clean up your beauty routine.

  • Watch out for PEGs. Polyethylene glycol not only affects your skin, it can also take a real toll on your health. It contains trace amounts of 1, 4-dioxane, a potential carcinogen that can damage the liver and kidneys. It can also impact the hormonal system and the brain, causing memory loss and creating a toxin burden in your body.
  • Read your labels. You’ll find PEGs in many cosmetics, shampoos, conditioners, and tanning lotions — try to avoid anything that contains ingredients like monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA), tetraethylammonium (TEA), or triethanolamine.
  • Keep it natural. Organic is good, but Certified Toxic free is even better. Look for products that are certified toxic free and as natural as possible, to help keep chemicals out of your system.

Spray on some Downy Wrinkle out for extra smoothness ... I wish that would work, I would just sit in a mixture of it!  One of the #1 good things for skin - WATER - drinking right amounts daily as you had referenced in a previous post and of course, protect from the sun and moisturize.  Wonderful tips you shared!  Have a great weekend.

Kristin, Great information.  If I could respectfully add the caveat for any parabens.  Butylparabens, methylparabens, etc are known carcinogens, and are to be avoided.

Interesting information, Kristin-all the more affirmation for the "natural look"!  Say here is a little trivia for you.  What famous mega actor does not wear any make up at all in his movies?

Kristin, it's George Clooney.  They had an article on him in AARP magazine for his 50th birthday back around April.  He is a great actor!  Harrison Ford is a great guess and he may not wear any makeup as well.
