Not That I'm Antisocial...
And here we go with yet another round of social interaction with friends, family, in-laws, outlaws you name it. Unless you are living under a rock, have a bad internet connection or are just anit - anti, you very well know that the mighty Google has fired a huge salvo over the bow of FaceBook with its launch of Google+.
While, I do like the look, the seamless interaction and its function, it's like, well, here we go again; just one more social media thing we have to keep up with in order to get yet another swig of SEO from the "Holy Grail" of the Social Media craze.
It's not that I'm anitsocial. I like to socialize and I feel that I can schmooze with the best of them. Wow! It is mind boggling; I can now go to parties, Blog about them, Tweet from them, update my FaceBook status about it, friend you on FaceBook while schmoozing and even add you to my inner circle on Google+ all from the inconvenice of my smart phone. Gosh with all this socializing, I will have to block out time in my busy schedule to delete all those extra emails I'm getting and find the time earn a living.
Once again, It's not that I'm antisocial, but when do we draw the line? Businesses thrived quite well and prospered long before the internet, web pages and social media. Are we just adding spreading another layer of minutia on top of what is already there? I'm just saying...

Michael, I haven't even looked at Google+ yet... I am dragging my feet. It just seems like there are so many things to keep up with already. I suppose I will need to do it, but I also feel a little over-socialized already.

LOVED "all from the inconvenience of my smartphone". I will agree that before all the Social Networking came about, we got along just fine. Not sure how I feel about Google+ yet. So far, I'm choosing to sit back and watch. I may have to join in, but I'll let them get the bugs out first.

I totally get what you're saying. As convenient as all our technological advances are, remember when you were out of the office and you were completely out of the office? No one could interrupt your lunch or round of golf with a phone call. Those were the days...

Michael, it's hard to know when to draw the line but I'm finding using social media is paying off.  Even seniors (my target market as I specialize in reverse mortgages) are finding me on my sites.  I just got a new prospect who found me on LinkedIn.  Another one found me on Facebook.  I'll be keeping up with the social media since it appears it's going to lead to more :business.  :-)

Michael - I think I agree with Renee; I need a social media manager, and one more site isn't going to help.

You're right about one more to wonder about. I joined and the premise of it (the circles) is better than Facebook. So if it makes it big, I will edit something else out. Like you say, not enough time!

Well stated, Michael.  Many of us already spend too much time with social networking before even considering new networks.  It is difficult to find business justification for most of the social networking on ActiveRain.

 Blooming for you!

I agree.  A lot of the stuff we are "supposed" to do for whatever SEO reason, or to "keep up" is just the PhD (piled higher and deeper) of modern life.  Not all of us needs it!

I learned a friend was ill on FB. Was "old news" because I hadn't checked it recently.  Did not want to leave a comment; I wanted to pick up the phone and chat with my friend.  Alas, got voicemail, left a message and then a FB comment.  Sure do miss SOCIAL chats!

Well, stated. How about when you offend someone because they texted, messaged you and you didnot respond immediately.

I kinda have to agree with you on this one.  I have added the Google + and have been adding circles of friends and been added by them, but I really haven't had the time to go and look what it does.  I barely get on Facebook so I'm not sure how much I will use the Google +.  I feel somehow like I have to though.

I'm not sure when we draw the line. I have read so many articles about Google + and I wonder how, when and where I'm gonna start using it.

Hi Michael - interesting post. As a real estate professional, these social media tools can help you to get business and deepen the exisiting relationships you have with those in your sphere of influence (SOI). So, I definitely see them as a positive in my opinion and as more avenues to reach potential and past clients.

I also want to mention that I wrote a great post on AR, if anyone's interested, called Does Social Media Replace Your Real Estate CRM. It can be found here:

I'm synergied out.   A good 10% of my morning mail pieces is notices of actions other folks took on the Internet social sites of which I am a member but have little to no interest.

Hey folks!!!  I'm not sure I want 10% of my Internet mail time spend on just dumping this stuff.  It's almost like spam.

I can recall when I had to opt IN a site to get mail.  Now, I spend valuable time figuring how to opt OUT to stop the notices of each and every thought far too many with far too little to do want to suck me into their void.

I'm not anti-social.  I just want to plan my own time and not have some faceless Facebook entity do it for me.
