Carson Valley Wings and Willows Festival

This Saturday, July 16, 2011, the first annual Carson Valley Wings and Willows Festival will be held in Genoa, NV, about an hour's drive south of Reno.  Beginning at 8am and continuing until 8pm, everyone is welcome to tour the wetlands and learn more about the local birds, wildflowers and butterflies.  Throughout the day, there will be free workshops to learn about local Carson Valley wildlife, including bears, bats, butterflies, bees, birds and much more. 

The schedule of free wildlife workshops and presentations is as follows:

10am to 10:30am - Botany 101: Identifying Wildflowers
10:30am to 11am - The Facts of the Birds & the Bees
11am to 12pm - Bears of Carson Valley
12pm to 12:30pm - Agriculture in Carson Valley
12:30pm to 1pm - What Birds Can Tell Us
1pm to 1:30pm - Butterflies of Carson Valley
2pm to 2:30pm - Invaders Among Us (identifying and managing weeds)
2:30pm to 3pm - The Basics to Building a Backyard Bird Habitat
3pm to 4pm - Invaders of Nevada's Waters
4pm to 5pm - Things That Go Bump in the Night (owls and bats)
5pm to 7pm - Paint Out Exhibit

Tours of the wetlands as well as walking tours will be available beginning right at 8am.  Prices are very reasonable.  You can purchase tickets online early for a discount here.  The schedule for tours throughout the day is:

1pm to 2pm - Carson River Float 1
2:30pm to 3:30pm - Carson River Float 2
4pm to 5pm - Carson River Float 3
2pm to 5pm - Nature Photography
2pm to 5pm - Sierra Nevada Tour
6pm to 8pm - Sunset Serenity Tour

The Wild Animal Infirmary of Reno (WAIF) takes in injured wild animals, nurses them back to health and releases them back into the wild.  WAIF will be on hand at the festival to release birds-of-prey back into the wild.  In addition to the tours and workshops, all festival attendees will be able to enjoy family-friendly arts and crafts, reptile, raptor and beehive exhibits, food, live music and much more.
