I received an email today and in it was this statement: Today, July 11th, is National Cheer Up the Lonely Day. Let me ask you, did you know that? I guess because loneliness is a common ailment in today's world it needed a day all on its own. The book Lonely in America says, "Life in America has exploded, and loneliness is one main ingredient in the fallout." Isn't that sad to see that loneliness has affected so many people?
What can we do? A proverb states "Worry can rob you of happiness, but kind words will cheer you up" (Taken from Today's English Version) Could we offer to cheer up a lonely person today? A family member, a friend, a co worker or even a neighbor. Loneliness may be lessened by doing things for others.
Invite the lonely person over for a meal, or dessert, or go over and visit for a while. I'm sure we can find opportunities to show compassion. It it will help to combat the depression and feelings of loneliness at least for a while.
