Put Some Brakes On Your Mouth!
I get this situation quite often and wonder to myself if they realize what they could be doing to their deal. This also puts people in a akward position of weather or not to pass important information along or not.
Since I am not much of a talker, I enjoy people who can talk about anything and everything. But for some folks - they just don't know when to stop talking - or they talk at inappropriate times- or they take a professional conversation and turn it casual when they think they have a job or something else of value "in the bag".
Yesterday, showing a rental home, the folks started talking and about an hour and half later - they were still talking. Everything was covered - from their childhood to their parents passing away. As much as I like to get to know people - it was a little much.
But, I'm a good sport, so I listened. I listened enough to hear them say that they may not be qualified to rent the home. Now I may or may not have found out that three years ago they burned down a rental home because of a party gone out of control; or that the husband figured out how to "break" an AC unit in order to get a new one installed; and then the time they decided not to pay rent because of some reason - I stopped listening at "decided not to pay rent - it was enough information to raise red flags.
What they needed was some brakes on their mouths. Whether you are being considered for a rental home, a job, or selling something - you do need to know when to stop talking.
A few friendly tips to know when it's time to put the brakes on - if the person you are talking to:
Isn't saying much other than "uh huh" "oh" "ahh" "OK then" or if they are saying nothing at all - you've lost them. Isn't looking at you anymore, i.e, they are checking their cell phone, fixing something in a house, etc., it's time. Starts walking away and you are following them around - stop! Is trying to have a professional conversation and you start talking very casual or off topic - stop it while you can still re-direct the conversation. And finally, if you only hear yourself talking - slam on those brakes and start listening!
