I sometimes pick up a couple of vegetables when I walk my dogs. Noting like a fresh from the garden tomato between two slices of white bread slathered in Miracle Whip with a little sprinkle of salt lots of fresh ground black pepper. Most years I am a porch container gardener. I had my pots planted in spring and along came a tornado and blew the containers off my deck and spilled out my baby plants. That morning I thought I would be trying to salvage them... that afternoon I was grieving the loss of my nephew and didn't so much care about my porch garden anymore. But I've missed my fresh veggies. So I have ventured over to my neighbor's neighborhood "farmers market" where he sells tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, corn, and even eggplant, oh and don't let me forget peppers of several varieties. He waters from the lake and although we've had a very hot and mostly dry summer his garden is a beauty. I stopped in this morning and picked up a couple of tomatoes for my lunch. Fresh, wonderful smelling and picked this morning. He was out working in the garden when I stopped by. He always thanks me, but truly he is the one who should be thanked for our neighborhood "farmers market".
I also recently found this little stand (below) at the corner of Sinclair Road and Sinclair Circle. And there is one at the second driveway on the left on Cold Branch Road (and he has patty pan squash). So while you canstill go to town in Eatonton on the court house square on Thursday afternoons and visit s traditional "farmers market" you can drive around the neighborhoods at Lake Sinclair and get some great deals on fresh vegetables any day of the week.
The other day I cooked some yellow squash on the grill and they were just wonderful. Last night I stopped in and got the fresh Zucchini and grilled those with a steak and sweet potatoes and they were wonderful. Okay, Okay, actually Donald did the grilling part, but I did wash, cut and season them. So if you live around Lake Sinclair you might should check out the neighborhood "farmers markets". If you want to know where the closest one to you I know about is, fell free to give me a call on my cell phone. 478-456-5161.
I'm really thankful for my community and my neighborhood farmers markets. Maybe next year I will get back to gardening, but this year my neighbors have made me very thankful.
