Insurance Relief Around The Corner For Floridians

Floridians could soon get relief from rising wind storm premiums.

Due to launch this November, insurancediscountinspections.com (IDI), a consumer service company specifically designed to help Floridians lower the wind storm premium of their existing homeowner policy.

"This is a necessary service in which we will be providing for Florida Homeowners," says David Manley, President & Founder, "insurance rates are out of control and this service is the only way to see immediate impact in lowering rates."

Florida legislation mandates insurance carriers to offer discounts towards wind storm coverage for certain construction features that lend in making a home more resistant during wind storm activity.  These discounts are mandatory for all insurance carriers that write policies in Florida.

Spawned by feedback from independent insurance agents needing a one call resource for consumers, insurancediscountinspections.com, with its team of Professional Inspectors, will be able to facilitate these services for homeowners throughout Florida.

"We are dedicated to servicing the needs of Floridians," adds Mr. Manley "and we're willing to invest heavily in educating the public about these discounts and educate the insurance and real estate industries on how these certifications can help the struggling Florida economy."

As reported, the Florida insurance and real estate markets have been adversely affected by the recent hurricane seasons.  Causing record insurance losses and staggering real estate inventory.  IDI is also working with grass roots organizations and local legislators to modify existing language regarding Wind Mitigation Inspections.  "There are two major problems with the current legislation," states Mr. Manley, "the language doesn't specify how and when to inform the consumer of these savings and most carriers and agents don't mention anything on their respective websites.  We feel the state should mandate these inspections for every policy written and mandate re-certification every (5) years."

As it stands, the consumer is notified of the potential discounts, but this notice is within the policy which most consumers do not read.  "Most agents aren't aware of all of the components in which make up the certification, so the consumer is not maximizing their discounts," Mr. Manley continues,"we conducted a poll of over 900 homeowners and 30 percent were told by their insurance agent that the only way they could reduce their premium was to increase their deductible.  That's just not right."

Walter,

For some, staying with State Farm is not a wise decision.  They have intentionally increased premiums in certain areas and for certain age or type of construction specfically because they are attempting to minimize their risk.  The max. windstorm discount through State Farm is 38%.  In your case, you might not be getting the discounts you are entitled to.

In your comment you mentioned, "state farm only gives discount for one highest item, doesn't matter how much you do to improve your home."

The sigficant increase that we all have seen, where increases approved prior to the rate freeze inacted by Gov. Christ.  You can thank Gov. Bush for that.  This year, all proposed double-digit increases by multiple carriers have been rejected.

Once again, the maximum discount for that carrier is 38-39% of your windstorm premium.  This discount is rendered by a series of construction features.  Each feature rolls up in to the overall discount.

If you would like to research rates by county, go to www.floir.com , the Office of Insurance Regulation and click on shopandcompare.  You can click on your county and it will tell you the average premium per company.  You will find across the state, State Farm ranks within the top three highest premiums.  Other carriers are much more competitive.

Terry,

I tend to disagree.  Now I am not a huge advocate of the state and their role containing the insurance industry, but I do know a good deal when I see it.

Our clients here in South Florida are averaging over $1800 a year in savings from having the Wind Mitigation Inspection.  They are amazed at how far a $129.00 inspection actually can go.

Not to doubt your work history, but your profile states you have been in the "staging" profession since 1996, so how much insurance work have you done lately? Considering the legislation mandating these discounts is relatively new.

First, the State of Florida isn't giving anything.  The insurance carriers are and it is in upwards of 38-56% reduction in wind premiums.  Unfortunate to many Floridians, the discounts had not been defined or enforced.  But you all can thank Bush for this.

Second, if one keeps State Farm and not shop rates, in particular after a 125% premium increase, well one deserves to pay it.

Third, if you do the simple math, the money you can save by adding wind devices to your home makes great financial sense.  And your family and you are much safer and you don't have to rely on the insurance industry to bail you out.

Floridians need to realize insurance is for when the unfortunate happens.  Tracking a hurricane as it travels 3500 miles from the African coast is not a fluke disaster.  Knowing your home runs the risk of being totalled because it was built in 1972 and you don't want to bite the bullet for shutters is just neglegent.

In your defense, I do feel that the discounts should be much deeper for homes that were built since 2001 or have had retro-fits.  To receive a 30% disount on a wind premium that is already too high to begin with, well to me that seems like a "sale" at Nordstrom's.

Nonetheless, it is still an opportunity to save.
