Orange Groves in Los Angeles, CA are a fading tourist attraction.

Orange Grove in Tarzana CA by Endre Barath,Jr.

If you have seen the movie China Town, I am sure you would remember the Orange Groves, you would have noticed, that Los Angeles was full of Orange Groves. Now fast forward about 70-80 years from the period that China Town portrayed in the movie, you will be sadly disappointed  if you come to Los Angeles for the first time, that there are hardly any Orange Groves in Los Angeles and vicinity. If you are looking for them they are far and few in between. Even local Angelinos have few recollections of where you can find one.

Here and there you will find an Orange Grove.  For example in Canoga Park, Woodland Hills and Sierra Madre you will find them. Now if you want to drive 30 -50 miles you will find them, but that is not the Los Angeles Orange Groves of the Hollywood's fame.

Orange Grove Close up in Tarzana by Endre Barath,JR

So you can imagine my excitement as I was previewing for a client some homes and look what I found. Orange Groves in the middle of an affluent pocket of all places Tarzana. This Orange Grove was surrounded by Luxury Homes. I immediately stopped and took some pictures. I could hardly wait and share with everyone. So please enjoy and let me know what you think.

Hi Endre,   I can't think of a spot in Orange County where there are orange groves....nice to see that there are a few left in Los Angeles.  Thanks for sharing.

Endre, Guess everyone decided that converting the land to buildable property was way more lucrative than oranges.  The last orange groves I saw in person was in Florida, and even that has been quite a few years ago.

Endre, The disappearing American product or in this case produce tells a sad story. I too would have been jubilant to find this orange grove in a now urban setting.

Sadly progress has reared its ugly head again. This time the victims are the orange groves in the Los Angeles area. Ever wonder why orange juice costs so much?!! Here's the answer!

Hello Endre and this is a very interesting post & photos. When Walt Disney was dreaming about his amusement park there was a photo where he was looking over hundreds of acres of Orange Groves, times do change and not always for the better.

We don't have many orange groves left in our area of Florida either, Endre. I miss seeing them and smelling the blossoms. Of course, VB is right, Disney took out tons of them in the Orlando area too.

Craig you are so right I cry every time I buy Orange Juice almost as much as a bottle of cheap wine:) VB yes Disney sure did not consider the Orange Grove's destruction. Ironically do you know what it cost to go to Disney Land for a Family of Four? Scary

Endre,  Same exact thing here in south Florida.  There used to be an orange processing plant nearby.  They sold off the land some years ago.  Now it's another subdivision and a medical building.  Most of the groves are in the center of the state.

I enjoyed seeing your photos of the orange groves.  Did you get any oranges?

Endre, those orange groves are not exactly what I expected....they seem so well manicured.  Anyway, I kind of know what you mean...the economy of this area used to revolve around cotton plantations, but the large ones are now gone...you can still see smaller ones and you definitely know when it's harvest time because the sides of the roads are usually littered with cotton.

Nick you make a great point about the cotton plantations, I remember driving thru Georgia and Alabama in the late 70's and the fields were all white cotton flowers.......
