Flying High | Soaring Above Your Fears

Real Estate Technology with Imagine WOW! Digital Marketing Agency

As some of my Active Rain friends may know, yesterday was my 40th birthday (Read: Forty, Fabulous and Ready for the Journey) and nothing short of spectacular.

My husband, an eternal romantic and someone who knows no bounds when it comes to celebrating life’s BIG moments, surprised me with a perfect day from beginning to end. Due to our continuous conversations throughout the years, he has been intensely aware of my “bucket list” and my need to “check the box” on several of those items.

So when my first surprise yesterday morning was Bucket List Item #1, I couldn’t contain my excitement.

Rebekah’s First Day of Flying Lessons

Rebekah Radice Soaring Above Your Fears

Before I knew it, I was soaring above the clouds and flying through the beautiful blue Colorado sky. The freedom and joy that I felt in those 60 minutes are difficult to explain. Flying offers a rush of adrenaline and compels me to perfect my abilities. It’s that merging of a singular moment where all at once you are the master of your destiny and the creator of your own future. Literally, the sky is the limit!

As soon as I had landed, I spoke with a friend who was eager to hear about my experience. After I breathlessly reeled off the highlights, my girlfriend exclaimed…”Rebekah, how in the world did you get in that small plane? I would have just about died from fear!”

The funny thing for me was, never once did the fear of flying cross my mind.  It was the excitement and thrill of doing something I had never done before that propelled me.

I saw flying as a challenge and believed that if it was something I truly wanted to do then nothing would stand in my way.

But her words have eaten at me and given me much to ponder in my own life and business.

  • How often do we allow our fears to keep our feet pinned to the ground?
  • Is it the fear of failure or even worse; is it the fear of success that we’re most frightened of?
  • What would happen if we soared above our own expectations?
  • What are the consequences for not stepping out of our comfort zone?

Fear is debilitating and paralyzing and can leave us feeling "stuck."  Understand though that you are not alone.  Everyone has fears, they just come in different shapes and sizes.

Whether it's the fear of speaking in front of a group or the fear that you will flub your way through your first listing presentation, each one is equal in its ability to keep us "stuck" within our business and life.

Be Objective

Take a few minutes and consider the potential benefits of facing your fear.

  • What could you accomplish if you faced your fear?
  • Is there anything you are losing by letting go of that fear?
  • How would your life be different if you were able to overcome just one fear that's been holding you back?

It only takes a moment to turn "Stuck" into "Awestruck" within your business and life.

Isn't it worth making a change?

Miss R--you are "aoaring" into your forties!  Watch out, world!!! I got to ride in a small plane during the "instrument flight test" of a fella I dated many years ago. He wore something that looked like a hood you would wear when you're using a piece of welding equipment...essentially so that he wouldn't "see" what was around him, as in flying in fog, for example. He just saw the instruments. For me, it was fantastic just being part of his experience, and I recall the vistas as crisp, clear and gorgeous. I almost always embrace being in a small plane better than a big one, because you are able to enjoy the look of what's below you better.

Thank you Kevin and yes, it was a fabulous birthday!

Thank you Kristen!  It's so easy to fall into patterns and allow ourselves to stay "stuck."

It was exciting Jennifer and I had an amazing time!  Thank you!

It was a great party Pamela..sorry you missed it! ;)  Too bad about the flying but it's definitely not for everyone.  Ihad wanted to do this for so long I was worried it wouldn't live up to the expectation but it absolutely did!

Rebekah, sounds like your birthday was a super one.  Fear can be paralyzing but I don't think that you will ever suffer from that malady.

"It only takes a moment to turn "Stuck" into "Awestruck" within your business and life". - Love this and I'm sure that's one of your guiding principles.

Happy 40 Rebekah! Now you can play your "over 40" card (don't care what you think and why would your opinion matter to me?) whenever you want! I love mine! I think I was using it even before I got to that stage! Welcome to the club and you are and will continue to be FAB! :D

That's exactly how I feel Gayle!  There is so much to see in the smaller planes and the view from that front seat is spectacular!  I know its not a cheap hobby but it sure is a fun one!!

Oh I don't know Leah - there are definitely things that try to keep me down.  It's exciting to recognize them though and fight your way through it! :)

Thank you Ralph and yes I sure did!  The weather was gorgeous so a perfect day for flying.  Fear certainly does "eat at us" and can eat us alive if we let it.  Crazy little thing our brains and what they do to us!

That's exactly right Debbe and we should never allow it to become our reality!

I'm happy to be a part of such a prestigous club Peg!  Thank you!!

Rebekah -  a fantastic way to welcome your 40's.  I too really enjoy flying but I'm much like Lee above; too noisy for me.  I always thought I'd enjoy gliding tho, hmmmmmmmm

I'm not sure if I have any fears left . . .  you've really got me thinking now.

Congratulations!  And flying no less... I was a flight mechanic for several years and I loved it.  Nothing better than getting in the air, seeing the ground 15000 feet down, and settling down for a nap.

Rebekah,  WOW what a great way to celebrate your birthday.  And what a sweetie of your husband to get this all set up for you!  I know SOMEONE that clearly states: "Fear NOT, for I am with you!!  When you walk through the fire I will be there, and through the rain.... and you will not be burned or drown."   So we should not allow it to hold us back.  We need to look at the blessings in all things, and turn the things we fear, into our Strengths.  Easier said than done. :)

Love what Joan said!  This is such a great analogy, Rebekah, and I'm so happy that you got to soar.  I agree ~ I think often that the fear of success is as troubling for many as the fear of failure.

Very cool Rebekah - I've flown in a small sea plane over Eastern Long Island and it was really cool to have a bird's eye view! For my 40th birthday, my husband and I spend a month in Africa. We spent time at the Amani Orphanage, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaroaro and then went out into the Serengeti - that had always been my dream and it exceeded all my expectation - however, I needed a vacation from my vacation!

Rebekah, Happy Belated 40th Birthday!  What a wonderful surprise from your husband and how great to be able to check off one of your to do's on your bucket list.  I really enjoyed how you listened to your friend and evaluated the idea of "fear".  Life is short and wasting it away in fear or wondering what could happen is not worth it.  We all need to push ourselves through the fear or we will never get better or learn more about ourselves.  Thanks for a wonderful post that made me think.  Happy Birthday!  --Krystal

Rebekah, I have a sense of excitement just reading your blog.   It's been awhile since I've gone sky diving or soaring, but flying by less conventional means is revitalizing beyond description.  It changes our chemistry.

Being able to revitalize business with the same intensity would be.....well....something to behold.  I love this blog!

Happy 30th birthday!    (Someone has to correct your typo!)  Brian

Fear is such an unfortunate part of all of our lives Richard.  I just keep shrugging it off! ;)  Thank you for always saying the nicest things.  I love the support!

Susan - We see gliders at the Air Force Academy all the time and it does look like fun.  You should give it a try!

Toph - Thank you!  It is a great way to see the world below you!

What a beautiful thing to say Joan and so true!  We really should not fear knowing who has our back. ;)  And yes, turning our fears into strengths is easier said than done but a worthy challenge nonetheless!

Rebekah, Happy Belated Birthday!  Wow, your husband was very thoughtful to get you flying lessons for your birthday.  Your post motivates me to try sky diving at least once.  Also, you made a great point about how we handle challenges.
