Was It That Easy?

Problems, we all have them every day. Most are fairly small and easy to fix. Others drive you to the edge of insanity. We all have things that get under our skin, that really tweak us or "push our buttons". I have a love hate relationship with technology, most notably with computers.I know how he feels

I have been struggling with a finicky computer for a few weeks. It will work fine for a while and then....BAM, I get the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death). And not just once, it recurs several times, I do this, I do that and it seems to be fixed. At least for a while.

Well this week it all went blue again. This time how ever Old Blue wasn't going away with a little of this and a little of that. So I go onto another computer and start searching on Google for some answers.

I love Google, you can type in anything and it seems it has an answer. I find an article that sounds like my problem. The author says the errors are basically to do with the computers memory. He suggests a little of this and a little of that after which one should open the computer and systematically remove the memory sticks one at a time.My memory...COMPUTER memory :)

I open my computer, discover that it badly needs a cleaning, and see that I have four sticks of memory. Odds are this could take a while. Well I clean out the computer, pull a memory stick out and start it back up.

Wouldn't you know it has been working fine ever since. A little slower because there is less memory, but no more wackiness and so far no BSOD.

I'm keeping them crossedI am still shaking my head in wonder that it was that easy to fix. I guess sometimes in life the solution comes easy and other times, who I am kidding, most times it's a struggle.

I usually just call my IT guy.  She is a small package, about 14, comes with an attitude and lives in one of the rooms upstairs.

James, What a relief.  It is always my fear that the BSOD is permanent and I wish I had backed everything up more recently.  Okay, I'm motivated.  Getting another drive to get info into.

I am lucky, have a relative in the computer repair business. He has helped me by making a folder I placed on my desktop with all the necessary tools to clean up and refresh my computer. I do it once every 10 days to two weeks. It has Malware Bytes, Super Anti Spyware, Spybot, along with several other things I routinely run to keep it running like a Caddy. In our business you can't be playing around just getting your computer to boot up BEFORE you even do your work! Very frustrating!

Jim,

Unfortunately computers are that way. Like Fred said I use many of the same programs but even those can not stop a hardware issue.

One of my best friends is an IT administrator, and he hates when I call on a computer issue. I know just enough to be very dangerous with computers so when I have an issue it usually is a real challenge.

The best anit-virus software is called a Mac ; ). But alll my programs are designed for windows.

James, I have in my past been BSOD'ed. I switched to Mac and have had no problems. I still use my old PC for the "office" computer. I will keep the memory stick trick in mind when the BSOD rears its head.

Carol, I can't stand not being able to fix it myself. So far I have been able to avoid the repair shop.

Jay, That would be repair GAL. :) Does she cost much to keep around?

Jeanne, I learned the hard way long ago about backing up. I own TWO external hard drives.

Fred, nice to have that resource in the family. You are so right about the wasted time just trying to be able to do your work.

Don, I use my arsenal of stuff too, but as I said it turned out to be hardware. As for the Mac, everyone loves them, but one reason they do not suffer the spy ware problems is simply numbers. There are far less Macs than PCs. The hackers want to get the most bang for their malicious buck, so the target PCs. Macs can be infected too, they just aren't the nearly as often.

Peg, I like your dad's philosphy ;)

Peter, It worked on my machine, but my kids machine had a major coronary just recently too. That one was the mother board, It's now junk.

Yes, yes she does.  In more ways than one.  I have never called her a "gal."  And wondering how that one would go...

James, I'm not sure I'd trust removing one of the memory sticks as a solution.  Seems like that would cause more problems long term.

Go to Crucial.com and download their memory tester.  It can tell you if you can upgrade your memory sticks to run faster, especially if you're only going to use 3 instead of 4.

And maybe ask someone who really knows about computers on this one.

Jeremy, The only detrimental consequence to removing a stick of memory is slowing down the computer. I can tell you this also, my computer has not had any issues since I removed that one memory stick. I will be buying a replacement this week ($20). I check out that memory tester in the mean time. Thanks.

Wow, that seems weird.  But yes, check out the memory tester, as it helped me with my laptop memory, and REALLY sped up what I can do.
