Making a Re-location Checklist, Part 2
Making a re-location checklist can be a good way to make the process of moving more manageable and efficient. An organized plan can make anything easier, and creating a detailed re-location checklist before a move is the best way to guarantee that everything that needs doing will get done. A re-location checklist won't suddenly turn a move into something pleasant. However, it will help you make sure that nothing gets lost, left undone, forgotten, or left behind.
Only a Week Left: The Final Preparations
No matter how you arrange things, this last week is going to be hectic. The best you can do is to be as systematic as possible so that you will get things done with a minimum of strain and difficulty. Refer back to your re-location checklist, for reassurance that you are making good progress.
Some final preparations will include:
- Packing absolutely everything you won't need in these last seven days.
- Making a detailed inventory of everything as you pack.
- Clean everything thoroughly, but don't drive yourself crazy trying to get rid of every last spot.
- Let everyone know how and when they will be able to reach you at your new destination and at your travel stops along the way.
- Make a survival box filled with everything you will need as you travel, and after you first arrive at your new home (i.e. paper, pens, stamps, envelopes, paper utensils and plates, personal care products, travel alarm clock, first aid supplies, tape, scissors, small tool kit, bottled water, etc., etc.)
The Last Day: Before You Leave
There are just a few things you should do before everything is loaded for shipment and before you begin your trip to your new home. These final actions include:
- Check all boxes and packing containers to make sure they are secure and marked.
- Defrost and unplug the refrigerator if it is staying; unplug all appliances that will remain.
- Drop off the house keys with your realtor or rental agency.
- Let your insurance agency and the police know that your house will be empty.
- Get your traveler's checks and make sure your debit cards are funded.
- Watch the movers closely so they stay on their toes.
- Turn down the thermostat, close and lock the windows and doors, and check one last time to make sure everything has been removed from the house.
- Count the kids to make sure they are all there.
- Leave, and don't look back.
Smooth Sailing
By following this re-location checklist (or your modified version) closely, it is possible to make your move a smooth and successful one. Fun, no – your move is still going to be a chore. But chores can be accomplished with a high level of efficiency, if you go into those chores with a well-thought out plan.
