A couple of months ago, Big Guy mentioned that he wanted to participate in an event hosted by the guys and gals on the local Lake Lavon Fishing Forum in honor of US Servicemen and Women. I thought it would be a great idea and kind of forgot about it....until three weeks ago when he "volunteered" me to help! My contribution was to make 2 Cast-Iron Skillet Pineapple Upside Down Cakes and 2 batches of Jalapeno Brownies for him to take to the fish fry.
Yesterday, the Take a Soldier Fishing Fish Fry was held at Lake Ray Roberts. Big Guy loaded up his fish fryer, propane, and of course, 5 cake pans filled with goodies (bonus pan of brownies for the volunteers). I was touched to hear how much participating in the event meant to him upon his return. He has already volunteered to help next year and believes it will become an annual event for him personally.

It seems that every effort during the weekend of the event is planned to truly honor those who have served our country and their families. The Pledge of Allegiance is spoken, the National Anthem is sung, and the soldiers are greeted by columns of flag-waving volunteers when they reach the lunch pavillion. Other patriotic songs such as "God Bless America" and "God Bless the USA" are also included. Several meals are catered throughout the weekend, while local boaters take a soldier or two each out to fish and enjoy the lake. All efforts are made to accommodate those with special needs and wheelchairs as well.
Fishing may not seem like a big deal to some, but to the men and women who work to plan and host this special event, every detail is performed with one goal in mind....to do their part to make our Servicemen-and-women feel appreciated and valued for the sacrifices they have made for our great country!
If you would like more information on events hosted near you, visit the Take A Soldier Fishing website. I know that it has touched our family and we will be participating in local events for years to come.
