A Promising Opportunity for 60 New Mexico Prisoners

This story has probably not received a lot of Press, but it was reported by KOB TV, my source of News and other Information and I think it warrants another look.  As I have blogged about the wildfires in New Mexico in the recent past, there was something very creative taking place behind the walls of the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Los Lunas, New Mexico...it is called the Inmate Work Camp Program..

Essentially, the Inmate Work Camp Program provides a new career opportunity to non-violent prisoners to become firefighters.  So in the recent fires, some of the personnel on the frontline fighting the various fires were actually prisoners.  As was reported, there are currently 60 prisoners  who have been trained to be firefighters.  And there is a waiting list.  Here is the story as reported on KOB TV.

I have no problem putting prisoners to productive work. It serves them, and society, both!

This can be a great opportunity for job training for NON-Violent offenders.  We never seem to hear about the positive programs that are going on out there.   Negative stories are much more important to the media.

Very interesting and useful.  If they are successful we could have a whole new group of firefighters.

C. Lloyd,

Any time you can take a prison inmate and train them with a skill I believe its a good program. Most of these folks get out of prison with no skill set to get a job. While fighting wildfires maybe temporary these folks could apply to be firefighters in some city or town,. I think it is an excellent program.. Thanks for the blog..

Good Morning C Lloyd, this will be an excellent program for New Mexico.  We have a similar program here in California that is run by the staff at the 'High Desert Prison' in Susanville.  The firefighters are excellent and serve their communities well.
