Does a Toastmaster make the Wine Toast?

A colleague of mine invited me to a "networking"  event today at noon.  Networking... Of course my ears perked up.  In our Bay Area Real Estate market has been just a little trying, I am out performing many "Back To Basic" activities to fill my day.  Today was a Toastmasters Day!  Great!  I like to make toasts and I like to enjoy good wine.  I thought there was a correlation between the two.  I was looking forward to this networking meeting.  Not only was I going to meet potential buyers and sellers, we were going to have fun too!

I was surprised, but not in the way I was expecting.  We arrived early to our appointment.  As we entered the room, I realized no wine bottles, no glasses, not many potential buyers or sellers.  Instead, standing in front of me was a podium, a small group of people, a gavel, and a quiet room.  As I glanced at my peer with a question mark plastered on my face, "She said, "Oh, didn't I tell you?  This is a speech club.  It is a place to face your fears of public speaking!"  FEAR????  I was the wallflower in High School.

Selling real estate, and presenting listing presentations was acceptable.   Drinking a glass of wine and making a toast was even more enjoyable.  But standing up in front of those I do not know and give a 1-2 minute speech was not what I was expecting.  But in an unsuspecting, good sort of way, it made me realize.... I tend to stick to the activities in my business that are safe.  Why not  think "Outside the Box".....venture into my fear zone, and explore a part of selling real estate that is not so natural.   I guess I need to face my fears, and stop being the wall flower!

Kimberly ~ Toastmasters was suggested to me last year when I decided I needed to get over my fear of public speaking.  I really wanted to conduct an adult ed class at my high school, but remembered how I hyperventilated when I went back to college in my thirties, and had to give my paper standing up in front of the class.  I didn't go to Toastmasters but purchased the best book I could find (based on reviews) from Amazon.  It helped me put things into perspective about why I have my fear and gave me some good tips.

I had to step out of my comfort zone if I wanted to go forward with my business.  I am so glad I did it!  I am conducting two classes this Fall and am already planning my Spring class!  The first 10 minutes are shaky for me, but then I'm off and running.
