Birds of a Feather – Seagulls on the Hudson River

Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams NY Realty - 120 Bloomingdale Road #101, White Plains NY 10605

Last Friday, I made a few new friends.  Not of the human variety – my new pals had feathers and seemed to enjoy  spending their time time soaring above the Hudson River near the Yonkers NY waterfront.

I don’t spend that much time down there so I was surprised at the number of seagulls that  had made themselves at home in this location.   They were  perched along the River Walk – Kings of all they survey.  They graciously allow us land-locked bipeds to share their  habitat with them.  And a couple of them obliged me by posing for a photo shoot.   The little guy below was particularly generous with his time.  He posed for shot after shot.  When he finally flew away, I promised I would pick a photo that showed off his best side…I hope his nest has a high-speed connection and that he approves  of the shot.

It looks like a dreamy place to visit; so cool and near the water. With this heat spell we are all having, I cannot go out except to walk at 6;30 a.m. or to drive somewhere. It is still 80 degrees and it is 9:25 p.m. Hope you have a nice time there with your two bird friends!

Dear Ruthmarie,

I always love reading your blog because it brings me memories of visiting my two aunts - one in Ardsley and one in White Plains. Seagulls are certainly a part of that memory.  Who knows?  In that location they could be NY or NJ or even CT seagulls coming for a visit to Yonkers!  Now long distances for birds.

Have a happy day -

Spending time with nature  and it's creatures is a great way to relax and appreciate what's right outside your door.  I wonder if your gull friends went home and wrote a bird blog about you.

Hi Kristen - It was hot that day -but not as hot as today! The birds definitely had a good thing going. There is always a breeze along the Hudson. Hi Lynn - Thank you so much. I'm glad my blogs remind you of the area - I guess that means they are doing their job! Seagulls are definitely part of the fabric here. I was surprised to see so many more in Yonkers than I do a bit further up-county. There were many more than I expected. The gull that I took the photo of seemed to enjoy the attention. He posed politely for a couple of minutes. Hi Doug - "Crazy lady keeps taking my picture - At least she is only shooting with a camera!" Hi Barbara - I turned on the AC just a little while ago. I generally don't need it until about 1-2 PM - but it was just too hot. They were panting to keep cool. Huskies do not dissipate heat well - so they have to have AC support. Now the dogs are in AC heaven.

Hi Ruthmarie - it nice to see someone who appreciates these elegant and talented flyers. Seagulls are the first birds I remember seeing as a child - I've always liked them.

They generally don't let me get so close - But these guys were used to people and thought it was just fine that click away.  They are graceful flyers.

Hi William - I don't get the birds in flight the way you do.  But I'm trying to learn more.  I've learned to appreciate these wonderful feathered creatures so much more after spending some quality time with them and my camera.

Hi Robert - My new friends were very helpful - very patient - They seemed to know I was a "friendly."
