Last Mission Accomplished and Home to Stay. Thank you Atlantis!

The safe landing of the Space Shuttle Atlantis on 7/21/2011 at 5:57 AM, signalled the end of an era here on the Space Coast. This 12 day flight officially ended the 30 year old shuttle program but there is renewed hope for continued success at KSC. The Atlas V rocket is undergoing safety evaluations to determine if it can be used for manned space flights. Delta rockets continue to launch payloads and Space X is quickly becoming a viable commercial launch program. NASA will now focus on deep space exploration while dealing with serious budget restraints.

Welcome home Atlantis! I'll visit you when you are on permanent display at the Kennedy Space Center.

When the shuttle last landed a month or so ago, I heard the huge sonic boom here in Sarasota! I am bummed that I missed this last one as I was looking forward to hearing the final salute. Great post! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Vincent - I'm surprised that you could hear the sonic booms in Sarasota. They're really loud right here in Cape Canaveral but you are on the other side of the State!

John,

A sad day for America. I read that we just added 8,000 NASA employees to the unemployed.

Rich - Yes, it's a sad day for the USA and NASA. The job losses certainly don't help my area but the cruise ships are going strong and tourism will always be a large part of the local economy. We have to keep a positive attitude.

And now we get to pay Russia for trips to space?

Ann - Apparently so. The NASA funding cuts have had an effect in my area and I guess we'll see how much very soon.

Hi John, Sad to see this chapter come to an end in space travel.  It will be interesting to see what unfolds and hopefully the private sector will find a way to get it up and going in the not too distant future.

Hi Gloria - Actually, there is a Jupiter Probe launch on Aug, 5th with 2 more planetary launches after that. Things are still rolling along, just not manned flight for now.

John, 1,000 of those NASA employees lost jobs here at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville Alabama.

Nick - It sucks losing your job, especially after so many years of dedicated service. We really need to get a manned space program going again fast!
