HEAT WAVE PRECAUTIONS. Please Check on Children and Seniors! Also those with a Respiratory Diagnosis

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Gateway 0225 070 495

During this heat wave and especially for those attending the Prince William County 150th Civil War Reenactment this weekend, please take precautions for the Heat Wave we are experiencing.  Please be extra cautious with Children, Seniors and those with a Respiratory Diagnosis.  Check on them often.

Stay indoors as much as possible.

Slow down and avoid strenuous activity. Do not try to do too much on a hot day.  Kathleen Vetrano Registered Nurse, REALTOR

If your home is not air conditioned, go to a place where you can get relief from the heat, such as air conditioned shopping malls, libraries, theaters or other community facilities that may offer refuge during the warmest times of the day.

Children and seniors and those with heart and lung diseases (including asthma) are most at risk of heat-related illness.

Check on the welfare of family, friends and neighbors. Call 9-1-1 immediately for anyone who is unresponsive or otherwise suffering from the effects of heat.

Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle for any length of time.

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect heat and sunlight and help maintain normal body temperature.  Protect your face with a wide-brimmed hat.

Drink plenty of water regularly and often, even if you do not feel thirsty.  Attempt to stay hydrated.

Limit intake of alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. They can actually lead to dehydration.

Eat well-balanced, light, regular meals.

Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings or louvers. Outdoor awnings or louvers can reduce the heat that enters a home by up to 80 percent.

Avoid too much sunshine. Sunburn slows the skin’s ability to cool itself.

If you are outside, use sunscreen lotion with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating.

If you do not have air conditioning, stay on your lowest floor, out of the sun. Electric fans do not cool the air, but they do help evaporate perspiration, which cools your body.

Exercise caution in plugging in air conditioners or fans. Do not use extension cords or plug in too many appliances on the same circuit.

Kathleen  We opted out of the re-enactment due to the forecast.  I can't believe there won't be work for the medics

So...here I sit in my air conditioned little home.  The thought of the reenactors in full costume is almost too much to bear.

It is Chris.  I know the county and services are prepared.  We will be at the 150th reenactment tomorrow.  Let's hope that the heat is not as bad as predicted.  Thanks for stopping by.

Kathleen, good reminder for us all in this heat.  We keep our dog inside and he doesn't like going out unless nature calls.

Last July was the coldest on record since 1933 here in San Diego. This July is following in its footsteps. I don’t miss the extreme heat that we often have in the summer, but we still have Santa Ana season in September and October when the hot, dry winds hit us out of Nevada.

Lisa,  It is usually not this hot.  It seems like there is extreme weather or events all over.  Adjustment to the circumstances.  It is very important to know and take precautions.

Even though my home is air conditioned, when it’s really hot outside, I like to go window shopping at the mall, getting some exercise by walking around for a couple of hours, and saving a few hundred kilowatt hours on my air condition bill!

Jim,  That is a great idea.  So many times people lock themselves in the house on hot days.  A good way to get out, get some exercise, and do some chores while staying cool.

Back to let you know that it finally got hot here. Some areas of the County hit 117 yesterday and were expected to be at 113 or so today. Where I live it's a pleasant 94. Time to go do a little window shopping at the air conditioned mall.
