Reading is a popular pastime for the residents of Georgetown, and the access to books just became a little easier. The Georgetown City Council recently approved the purchase of a bookmobile in the amount of $128,738 for the public library that will be financed by the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library.
Library Director Eric Lashley said, “We’re taking our assets, programs and materials out to the people that can’t come out and enjoy the wonderful library we have here in Georgetown.” The Friends of Georgetown Public Library will make a payment of $60,000 towards the new bookmobile, and the new mobile library will be paid in full once it is delivered around December of this year. To date, the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library have raised $90,000 for the project.
The new bookmobile will be a 17-foot long custom 2012 Turtle Top Odyssey sold by Texas Bus Sales. The bookmobile will come with custom carts that will allow employees to easily transport the books into local nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. The new mobile library will also reach out to residents with limited mobility during the school year. During the summer the bookmobile will be available to children and lower income families.
