Affordable Housing Resources in Brooklyn, New York
New York City in general is an expensive place to live. Robert De Niro just put his Manhattan townhouse up for sale for a mere 14 Million dollars (its a little bit bigger than the ones pictured to the right no doubt). Despite what you might think, affordable housing still exits in the Big Apple, especially in my favorite borough of Brooklyn, New York.
To make it easier for the non-millionaire looking to purchase a house, condo or co-op in Brooklyn, New York, here is a list of affordable housing resources that you can take advantage of:
The State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA) Products for First Time Homebuyers - SONYMA offers five mortgage programs as well as mortgage credit certificates, to assist first-time home buyers with the purchase of a home in New York State.
Homes for Veterans Program - This program, which is sponsored by SONYMA in conjunction with the the New York State Department of Veterans' Affairs, allows veterans and their spouses to buy their first home, or a new home, with very affordable terms.
Remodel New York Program - This program allows first time home buyers to finance a home and the necessary remodeling costs for homes in need of repair.
Achieving the Dream Program - First time home buyers are able to get down payment assistance through this program.
HomeFirst Down Payment Assistance Program - This program created by New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and the Mayor Bloomberg provides first time homebuyers with up to $15,000 toward the down payment or closing costs on a 1-4 family home, a condominium, or a cooperative in any of the five boroughs of New York City.
New York City Housing Lotteries - Housing lotteries allow lower income buyers to purchase properties in new (often upscale) developments build by developers who receive tax breaks and incentives by including a certain number of affordable housing units in their projects.
Habitat For Humanity New York - This non profit organization builds affordable, quality "green" homes for hardworking, low-income New Yorkers.
