Using Electronic Signatures

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Keller Williams on the Water

Electronic signatures - They are awesome.  I've been using them for about 2 years and would prefer to never have to go back to the old fashioned wet signatures with pen and ink.

Just this past week, we had a buyer in Afghanistan, his wife in South Georgia, a seller in North Carolina, a house in Atlanta and 2 Atlanta Real Estate agents in different parts of town.  In less than a day,  we had clean contracts signed and we are moving on.

When I told the other agent that I would be sending it for signatures electronically, she said that she wasn't set up for that.  I explained that she didn't need anything more than an e-mail address and access to the internet on her phone or computer.

Another example where we used electronic signatures was on a short sale with Suntrust. At closing, both the buyer and seller said it was the most efficient transaction they'd ever done. They didn't have to take time out of their busy days to print, sign and scan or fax back a document.  Everyone had clean copies of the contract and not once was it printed out, wasting paper and ink.

Electronic signatures are handy for things other than real estate too.   My husband aDocusign ducksnd I have signed contracts with contractors and movers using e-signature.   It really is quick and easy.

E-signing is the fastest way of doing business.   Who has time to stand around waiting on a fax anyway?  When the document is signed by the other party, I'm notified on my smart phone, which I can also click to sign on.  This is really helpful when I am away from the office out showing property or on my way to a listing appointment or even "gasp" spending time with my family or friends.

Stacks of paper are messy and hard for me to organize.  With e-signatures,  all my documents are stored online.   I don't have to worry about losing the paper or a computer crashing and losing my documents. Now, even my Keller Williams Realty office is paperless and we have e-signing as a benefit of the company.  I love that.

Jen - what a coincidence! This is the third blog post in the last few hours about electronic signatures. Guess something in the air

Jen, I agree that electronic signatures are great!  But ... can you believe it is 2011 and some people do not have email or understand how to use it?  I'm experiencing that right now ... :-(

Jon, something is in the air, it's an ActiveRain / DocuSign challenge.  We were encouraged to write about our experience using electronic signatures or tell why we don't.

Lisa, I have a client that I'm working with now that doesn't have email or a computer at home.  When they told me that, I paused and wondered how we would get the contracts signed.   I guess it will be the old fashioned way.

I agree with the use of electronic signatures. Docusign can make your transactions run much smoother, especially when your cients are out of town. I hope it catches on quickly.

I would love to use DocuSign but my broker doesn't allow it. He believes that the more personal interaction you have with your Clients, the happier the transaction will be for all. Sometimes speed is not as critical as establishing and keeping that personal relationship.

Jordan, we just need to keep doing it and hopefully it will.

Jim,  The great thing about electronic signatures is that you can still have a relationship with your clients,  things just get done more efficiently.  Plus, I love the tracking on it.  There's no more having to remember if you faxed something, you can just look on line and see if it was sent.

Karen, I've been getting some e-signature documents from a few RE/MAX agents.  It's catching on in some places.

Michael, I love that Keller Williams nationwide is using DotLoop now.  I also love that we have options with it to send our docs from E-Edge as a fax, pdf doc to be printed off or send it for electronic signatures.

Thanks everybody for your comments!

Hi Jen, just recently began using the myTransactions from eEdge, I have started them for rental listings transactions. I really like that I not have to print them out and have duplicates allover the place.

Eva, I like the MyTransactions part of eEdge too.  As an eEdge ambassador for Keller Williams, it's a class I've taught a lot.  It really helps to keep transactions on track.

Gail, I hope you're seeing the benefits of it.

Steve, I hope it's working out well for you too.

Eileen, most of my business is done with electronic signatures.  I can't imagine all the time that would be wasted if we didn't use it.

Thank you all for stopping by!
